EPS basis for the forward P/E and all scenario multiples: consensus forward EPS (broker-adjusted, non-GAAP).

Methodology: Valuation triangulated across four weighted anchors — an intrinsic DCF, a scenario-weighted PWEV, a Monte Carlo median (Student-t + regime switching) and a peer P/E re-rate. Anchors are blended at fixed declared weights, each counted separately; the Monte Carlo, the scenario PWEV and the DCF's exit-multiple terminal all rest on the same base multiple, so where they agree it is partly by construction — not independent corroboration. 02Thesis, Anti-Thesis & Variant View

Investment Thesis

Burlington is a branded apparel retailer in the United States, and its economics are the classic off-price arrangement: buy opportunistically, sell through quickly, and earn a small margin on a very large sales base. At $268 on 13 October 2026 the shares are fairly valued against the engine's triangulated fair value (+0%) and sit close to their 52-week high, which is the tension the engine's BUY is trying to resolve. The market is paying 23 times forward earnings for an operating margin near 8.1% (reported GAAP, TTM to Jul 2026) — a growth-company multiple on a thin-margin retailer — and the business carries net debt of ~$5.1B. What decides the outcome is operating leverage: with a margin that narrow, comparable-store sales are not one variable among several, they are the variable, because a small shortfall in sales per square foot lands on a cost base that is largely fixed rent, labour and distribution. New-store productivity has to hold at the same time. The single most damaging risk is that the comp slows while the store-opening programme continues, because that combination compresses both the earnings and the multiple at once.

Narrative drafted 2026-08-16 by claude-opus-5 under supervision; reviewed by Marinus 2026-08-16.

The dashboard below is the whole argument on one page: spot ($268) against each valuation anchor, the scenario tree, technicals and the options-implied move.

Integrated dashboard. The four weighted valuation anchors bracket the $268 spot from $208 to $349 — fairly valued — spot brackets the blend.
Integrated dashboard. The four weighted valuation anchors bracket the $268 spot from $208 to $349 — fairly valued — spot brackets the blend.

Anti-Thesis (The Real Bear Case)

The mechanism is margin arithmetic, not consumer doom. When the operating margin is near 8.1% (reported GAAP, TTM to Jul 2026), a low-single-digit decline in comparable sales is enough to remove a meaningful share of operating profit, because rent, store labour and distribution do not flex on the same timescale as revenue. Off-price also depends on the availability of discounted branded inventory; when upstream brands manage their own supply tightly or sell more directly, the buying advantage narrows and the merchandise margin goes with it. Add net debt of ~$5.1B and a continuing store build, and fixed obligations grow while the cash flow that services them wobbles. The valuation makes this worse rather than better: at 23 times forward earnings, priced near the top of its 52-week range, the stock has no cushion for a disappointing quarter, and the model's structural branch — sustained category share loss to online channels — carries a target below the 52-week low.

Key Debate

Gross Margin explains 65% of Monte Carlo outcome variance — the single variable that decides which side is right.

What the Market Is Pricing In

At the current price, the market pays 22.7× consensus forward EPS, vs the house DCF terminal 26.0×, and a peer median 18.5×. The house DCF sits 22% below spot, so the market is pricing in more than the house case — roughly 2.3pp of revenue CAGR.

Variant perception: the house view is below-consensus, and the thesis is primarily multiple-driven.

03Scenario & Valuation

Scenario Analysis

The scenario tree spans a structural 'Structural — E-Com / Category Disruption' downside ($156) to a 'Bull — Re-Rate' bull case ($626); the probability-weighted blend (PWEV $349) is +30% versus spot.

Scenario Probability Target Return vs spot
Structural — E-Com / Category Disruption 20% $156 -42%
Consumer-Spending Recession 17% $264 -1%
Base — Comps + Share Gains 35% $367 +37%
Growth — Store / Category Expansion 20% $496 +85%
Bull — Re-Rate 8% $626 +133%
Probability-Weighted (PWEV, after SBC dilution) — $349 +30%

SBC charge: scenario targets are gross per-share prices; the PWEV is reduced by one year of stock-based-compensation dilution (1.5% of shares, on SBC ≈ 1% of revenue), trimming the gross PWEV of $354 to $349 (-1.5%). SBC is charged once, as dilution — never also deducted from FCF.

Scenario rationale — the driver path behind every target:

  • Structural — E-Com / Category Disruption (20%, $156). Structural impairment — e-commerce / category disruption: earnings AND the multiple compress together. Target sits below the 52-week low by construction.
  • Consumer-Spending Recession (17%, $264). Cyclical downturn — discretionary retail comps + traffic + e-commerce/category mix vs costs weakens for 1–2 years before normalising.
  • Base — Comps + Share Gains (35%, $367). Mid-cycle — normalised discretionary retail comps + traffic + e-commerce/category mix vs costs; disciplined capital allocation; steady returns.
  • Growth — Store / Category Expansion (20%, $496). Upside — store + category expansion lifts earnings above mid-cycle; the multiple expands modestly.
  • Bull — Re-Rate (8%, $626). Upside tail — sustained tight conditions or a structural re-rate on store + category expansion.

Valuation Triangulation

Four weighted anchors — an intrinsic dcf, a scenario-weighted pwev, a monte carlo median (student-t + regime switching) and a peer p/e re-rate — read them with their basis in mind. The Monte Carlo, the scenario PWEV, any DCF's exit-multiple terminal and any peer re-rate key off a market multiple, so they are not independent; only a DCF's explicit-period cash flows are multiple-free, and its terminal usually carries most of its value. The discipline is to read the spread, not to treat four numbers as four independent votes.

Method Basis Fair Value vs Spot Weight in this name's blend
Monte Carlo median (Student-t + regime) multiple $312 +16% 18% (declared 15%)
Peer P/E re-rate multiple $218 -19% 12% (declared 10%)
Peer EV/Revenue re-rate multiple $287 +7% 0% — cross-check only
Scenario PWEV multiple $349 +30% 30% (declared 25%)
DCF (5-year + exit-multiple terminal) cash flow + terminal × $208 -22% 41% (declared 35%)
Triangulated (weighted) — $269 +0% 100%

The house blend DECLARES five anchor weights — DCF 35%, scenario PWEV 25%, Monte Carlo 15%, sum-of-parts 15%, peer re-rate 10%. For this name sum-of-parts is not computed, so 15% of the declared weight is redistributed across the anchors that exist — which is why the weights above differ from the declared ones. The fair value is unaffected by this disclosure; the blend has always worked this way. The company-lever row in the Sensitivity section is an illustrative EBIT × multiple value, not a sum-of-parts anchor.

Peer EV/Revenue re-rate — 0% weight: it duplicates the peer-multiple information already carried by the Peer P/E anchor while ignoring margin mix; weighting both would double-count the peer view. Shown as a cross-check.

Monte Carlo — the outcome distribution

10,000 paths, Student-t shocks (fat tails) with a regime-switching overlay. The median lands at $312 and 60% of paths finish above spot. The variance decomposition shows the gross margin is the dominant swing factor (65% of variance). The fundamental driver, not the multiple, sets the spread — a cleaner setup.

DCF — explicit-period cash flows with an exit-multiple terminal

A 5-year cash-flow path discounted at a WACC of 8.5%, plus a terminal value of final-year FCF × 26.0x — a terminal multiple equal to 0.85 × the base multiple that the Monte Carlo and the scenario tree also use → $208. The terminal value is 82% of enterprise value, so this anchor moves with the multiple assumption. The heaviest anchor in this blend (41%); because its terminal is a market multiple, it is not independent of the multiple-driven anchors.

DCF (exit-multiple terminal). WACC 8.5%, 26.0x terminal → $208; terminal 82% of EV.
DCF (exit-multiple terminal). WACC 8.5%, 26.0x terminal → $208; terminal 82% of EV.

Peer benchmarking — relative value

Against its 4 peers in the same GICS sub-industry, re-rating to their median forward multiple (P/E 18.5x) implies $218. A premium is only justified by superior growth/margins; otherwise it is multiple risk. Weighted just 12% so market sentiment does not set the fair value.

Cross-sectional peer benchmarking. Same-sub-industry median fwd P/E 18.5x → $218; EV/Rev re-rate → $287.
Cross-sectional peer benchmarking. Same-sub-industry median fwd P/E 18.5x → $218; EV/Rev re-rate → $287.

Across all anchors the spread is 49% of the median — wide (genuine disagreement — the blend carries low valuation confidence).

That ratio is (triangulated FV ÷ price − 1) ÷ (1 − 'Structural — E-Com / Category Disruption' target ÷ price). 'Structural — E-Com / Category Disruption' ($156, probability 20%) is the lowest-target scenario in the tree, taken gross of SBC dilution. Here the modelled upside is under a twentieth of the modelled downside, so the displayed ratio would read as exactly zero and is withheld rather than printed as a figure the document would immediately disown. Reasons the Thesis Could Fail (Falsifiable)

Pre-registered signals that would break the thesis — each polices a specific scenario boundary and is checked at every earnings update:

  • Organic revenue growth / order backlog < flat-to-negative for two consecutive quarters (2 consecutive prints). Sustained demand rollover breaks the base case toward the recession scenario.
  • FY revenue ($B) < 12.15 (next reported fiscal year). (rationale withheld pending re-authoring — frozen figure or verdict)
  • Probability-weighted fair value (PWEV) at the next re-run < 268.16 (any scheduled re-run). (rationale withheld pending re-authoring — frozen figure or verdict)

Fact / Inference / Speculation

  • FACT: Spot $268; 52-week range $227–$378; engine rating BUY; house target $349 (+30%). (source: Alpha Vantage 2026-10-12, 13 October 2026)
  • INFERENCE: Triangulated FV $269 (+0% vs spot · triangulated FV); the rating tracks the Monte-Carlo + scenario-PWEV core; the DCF anchor sits below the multiple-discipline core.
  • SPECULATION: At current prices the embedded bet is that Gross Margin keeps surprising favourably — an operating call the next two prints will test.

Conviction Score

Research Conviction measures the strength and quality of the research setup — input coverage, financial quality, valuation support, process agreement. It is NOT the probability that the recommendation succeeds; the forecast track record section is the evidence on that.

52.4/100 (confidence band 44.0–60.9), 25th percentile of 928 covered names (as of 2026-10-12). Weighted composite under config ros-1.21.0 — every component and its inputs below.

Probability-Weighted Return Profile

Horizon: 1 year — at this horizon CAGR equals total return by definition. Expected values are the probability-weighted sums over the full scenario set below.

Scenario Probability Target Total return Contribution
Structural — E-Com / Category Disruption 20% $156 -42.0% -8.4pp
Consumer-Spending Recession 17% $264 -1.4% -0.2pp
Base — Comps + Share Gains 35% $367 +36.9% +12.9pp
Growth — Store / Category Expansion 20% $496 +84.8% +17.0pp
Bull — Re-Rate 8% $626 +133.4% +10.7pp
Aggregate Value
Expected return (gross, 1y) +31.9%
Expected return net of SBC dilution +30.0%
Outcome dispersion (σ, from MC p10–p90) 69.7%
Expected Sharpe (rf 4%) 0.40
Downside expectation (prob-weighted loss branches) -8.6%

The gross expected return is the probability-weighted scenario return (it reconciles to the gross PWEV); the diluted figure applies the SBC share-count charge and matches the published PWEV-based target.

Expected Alpha

Expected return minus the return this name is REQUIRED to deliver for its risk (1-year horizon). Constants are pre-registered (preregistered-static (amendment #2, 2026-07-29); not fitted to MCH outcomes).

Component Value
Expected return (gross, 1y) 31.9%
Risk-free rate 4.49% (1y proxy (3m/2y midpoint; AV lacks a 1y tenor), as of 2026-10-08)
Beta (shrunk, 1y vs SPY) 0.92 (as of 2026-10-12)
Equity risk premium 4.5%
Required return 8.6%
Expected alpha +23.3%
Alpha per unit risk (EA/σ) +0.33

A negative expected alpha does not change the rating — it says the expected return does not clear the risk-adjusted hurdle at today's price. Rating mechanics are unchanged by this section.

Probability Cross-Checks

Not authoritative. The scenario probabilities in this report are AUTHORED — a judgement about how the world might go, not a measurement. Nothing below modifies them, the target, the rating or any position size. These checks ask only whether anything outside our own model agrees with us; where it does not, that is information for the reader, not a correction we have quietly applied.

Cross-check Ours Comparator Reading
Scenario spread vs options market 51.7% (1σ) 28.4% implied broadly consistent with the market's implied uncertainty
Mass above spot: scenarios vs our own MC 63.0% 59.8% the two expressions of our own view agree
Realised scenario frequency 59 dated anchors — 59 dated anchors available; realised-vs-prior comparison is now meaningful.

Authored set: 5 scenarios, probabilities summing to 1.0, mean target $353.77.

Rating Bridge

Rating = BUY because:

  • Probability-weighted scenario value implies +30% vs spot
  • Monte Carlo median implies +16% vs spot
  • DCF fair value (exit-multiple terminal) implies -22% vs spot — but this is terminal-value sensitive (exit-multiple $208 vs Gordon $126, 40% apart), so it carries less weight
  • Bear case (Structural — E-Com / Category Disruption) downside is -42% vs spot
  • Net: a reward leg exists but is negligible against the bear case — the reward-to-risk ratio would round to zero at display precision, and a displayed zero asserts a reward leg that is effectively absent — so the ratio is withheld as not asymmetric enough to print. The rating supports a Buy — note this is a Buy whose modelled downside is more than twenty times its modelled upside: a stronger contradiction than a sub-1.0× ratio, short only of the case where the reward leg is absent entirely.

FY+5 $14B $1B $0B $0B $1B $1B
Terminal — — — — $1B × 26.0x $15B

FCF is bridged: NOPAT + D&A − Capex − ΔNWC (capex intensity 3% of revenue, weighted from the segments) — not a single conversion fudge.

WACC 8.5% · Σ PV(FCF) $3B + PV(terminal) $15B = EV $18B; − net debt $5.1B → equity $13B ÷ diluted shares $0.06B = $208/share (exit-multiple terminal).

  • Gordon terminal → $126/share — a single-point perpetual-growth cross-check at g = 2.5% (one growth rate, not a range; it is not in the blend).
  • Incremental ROIC on the forecast capex ≈ 7% vs WACC 8.5% → below WACC — the incremental build is value-dilutive.

Disclosures & Limitations

This report is for informational and research purposes only. It is not personal financial advice and does not consider any investor's objectives, financial situation, risk tolerance, tax position, or liquidity needs.

  • This report is produced by the MCH Analysis quantitative research engine — valuation, scenarios, Monte Carlo and the decision layer are generated systematically from the disclosed inputs and the archetype/industry driver sets, and reviewed rather than written name-by-name. Every figure reconciles to the appendix and every score exposes its inputs.
  • No suitability assessment has been performed for any individual.
  • Market data may be delayed or inaccurate; figures are as of the analysis date.
  • Model outputs (fair values, targets, scenario probabilities) are estimates and may be wrong.
  • Forecasts are uncertain; past performance is not indicative of future returns.
  • The author or publisher may hold positions in securities mentioned.
  • Users should verify information against primary sources (company filings) before acting.
  • Investing involves risk of loss; there is no guarantee any target price is achieved.
  • Ratings follow a defined research methodology (12-month expected-return thresholds), not individual circumstances.

Forecast record. Across 478 scored pre-registered anchors (of 480), the direction implied by our targets has been right 55.2% of the time, above the 50% a coin flip would give, by more than sampling noise at this sample size. Read as probabilities, the targets score worse than a coin flip: a proxy Brier score of 0.253 against 0.25 (lower is better); the probabilities are reconstructed from the price targets, because the engine only began publishing its own on 2026-08-04. By published rating, against each name’s sector ETF (a BUY counts as a hit when it beats it, a SELL when it trails it, a HOLD when it ends within 5 points of it): BUY: 40.0% hits, average alpha +8.9% on 5 scored; HOLD: 30.6%, −2.5% on 418; SELL: 61.4%, −1.1% on 44; STRONG SELL: 50.0%, −0.6% on 6. STRONG BUY: none of its 2 anchors could be scored. Read this page’s price target with that in mind, and see the full accuracy record. Samples are thin and windows short; nothing here is settled in either direction.
