Methodology: Valuation triangulated across three weighted anchors — an intrinsic DCF, a scenario-weighted PWEV and a Monte Carlo median (Student-t + regime switching). Anchors that share a market multiple are not independent evidence and are weighted as one view. Figures reconciled to Alpha Vantage 2026-09-08. 02Thesis, Anti-Thesis & Variant View

Investment Thesis

Royal Gold acquires and manages precious-metal royalties and stream interests: it pays up front for a share of a mine's future production and then receives metal, or its cash equivalent, without funding the operating cost or the capital budget. The economics show in the numbers — an operating margin near 87% and essentially no capital spending — and they make the equity a leveraged claim on the metal price with the operator's cost inflation stripped out. Two disclosures belong up front. The engine is running this name against a scenario tree labelled for oil-and-gas royalty acreage rather than precious metals: the royalty economics carry across, the branch names do not describe these assets. And the anchors are unusually far apart — at $261 on 9 September 2026 the shares are fairly valued against the triangulated $245 (-6%), while the twelve-month anchor of $318 sits far above both, and the model separately flags that its simulated median earnings run materially below company guidance. The earnings basis under the HOLD therefore needs recalibration before the upside anchor is leaned on. The variable that decides the outcome is the metal price. The most damaging risk is that a royalty's downside is not the mirror of its upside: mines suspend.

Narrative drafted 2026-08-16 by claude-opus-5 under supervision; reviewed by Marinus 2026-08-16.

The dashboard below is the whole argument on one page: spot ($261) against each valuation anchor, the scenario tree, technicals and the options-implied move.

Integrated dashboard. The three weighted valuation anchors bracket the $261 spot from $191 to $318 — stretched — spot sits above the skeptical blend.

Anti-Thesis (The Real Bear Case)

The bear case starts with the metal price and ends with the portfolio. A royalty is a claim on somebody else's production decision: when the price falls below the operator's cash cost, output is cut or the mine goes onto care and maintenance, and the royalty receives nothing while its acquisition cost remains sunk. That asymmetry is the mechanism: the upside is a share of production at a higher price, but the downside is not merely a lower price, it is zero volume from the weakest assets. The multiple compounds it: royalty companies trade above the miners on the claim that they are insulated from operating cost inflation, so evidence that the portfolio is in fact exposed to operator distress removes the premium as well as the earnings. The structural branch resolves at little more than half the current quote and below the past year's low, and given the calibration gap already flagged between simulated and guided earnings, that branch should be treated as wider than the model shows.

Key Debate

P/E Multiple explains 89% of Monte Carlo outcome variance — i.e. value is set by the multiple the market will pay, a rate/sentiment regime bet as much as an earnings bet.

What the Market Is Pricing In

At the current price, the market pays 24.8× consensus forward EPS, vs the house DCF terminal 21.0×, and a peer median 16.2×. The house DCF sits 27% below spot, so the market is pricing in more than the house case — roughly 3.0pp of revenue CAGR.

Variant perception: the house view is above-consensus, and the thesis is primarily margin-driven.

03Scenario & Valuation

Scenario Analysis

The scenario tree spans a structural 'Structural — Permian Decline / Royalty Erosion' downside ($127) to a 'Bull — Activity + Multiple Expansion' bull case ($560); the probability-weighted blend (PWEV $318) is +22% versus spot.

Scenario Probability Target Return vs spot
Structural — Permian Decline / Royalty Erosion 20% $127 -51%
Downturn — Activity Slowdown 15% $221 -16%
Base — Permian Royalty Compounder 35% $317 +21%
Growth — Surface / Water / Royalty Bolt-Ons 22% $471 +80%
Bull — Activity + Multiple Expansion 8% $560 +114%
Probability-Weighted (PWEV) $318 +22%

Share-count charge: none applied. The probability-weighted value above is the gross per-share figure — no annual dilution is deducted — stock-based compensation runs at 0.9% of revenue; free cash flow net of SBC is $-0.47B. SBC is therefore disclosed, not charged: read the per-share figures as before dilution.

Scenario rationale — the driver path behind every target:

  • Structural — Permian Decline / Royalty Erosion (20%, $127). Structural impairment — underlying production decline + price erosion: earnings AND the multiple compress together. Target sits below the 52-week low by construction.
  • Downturn — Activity Slowdown (15%, $221). Cyclical downturn — royalty & stream volumes × realisations — no cost or capex exposure weakens for 1–2 years before normalising.
  • Base — Permian Royalty Compounder (35%, $317). Mid-cycle — normalised royalty & stream volumes × realisations — no cost or capex exposure; disciplined capital allocation; steady returns.
  • Growth — Surface / Water / Royalty Bolt-Ons (22%, $471). Upside — activity + multiple expansion lifts earnings above mid-cycle; the multiple expands modestly.
  • Bull — Activity + Multiple Expansion (8%, $560). Upside tail — sustained tight conditions or a structural re-rate on activity + multiple expansion.

Valuation Triangulation

Three weighted anchors — an intrinsic dcf, a scenario-weighted pwev and a monte carlo median (student-t + regime switching) — read them with their basis in mind. The Monte Carlo, the DCF terminal and any peer re-rate key off a market multiple, so they are not fully independent; only discounted cash flows themselves are genuinely multiple-free. The discipline is to read the spread and weight the cash-based view, not to treat three numbers as three independent votes.

Method Basis Fair Value vs Spot Weight in this name's blend
Monte Carlo median (Student-t + regime) multiple $251 -4% 20% (declared 15%)
Peer EV/Revenue re-rate multiple $22.77 -91% 0% — cross-check only
Scenario PWEV multiple $318 +22% 33% (declared 25%)
DCF (5-year + terminal) cash flow + terminal × $191 -27% 47% (declared 35%)
Triangulated (weighted) $245 -6% 100%

The house blend DECLARES five anchor weights — DCF 35%, scenario PWEV 25%, Monte Carlo 15%, sum-of-parts 15%, peer re-rate 10%. For this name sum-of-parts, peer P/E re-rate are not computed, so 25% of the declared weight is redistributed across the anchors that exist — which is why the weights above differ from the declared ones. The fair value is unaffected by this disclosure; the blend has always worked this way.

Peer EV/Revenue re-rate — 0% weight: it duplicates the peer-multiple information already carried by the Peer P/E anchor while ignoring margin mix; weighting both would double-count the peer view. Shown as a cross-check.

Monte Carlo — the outcome distribution

10,000 paths, Student-t shocks (fat tails) with a regime-switching overlay. The median lands at $251 and 46% of paths finish above spot. The variance decomposition shows the p/e multiple is the dominant swing factor (89% of variance). Value is a multiple bet: fundamentals move the answer far less than the rating does.

Monte Carlo distribution. Median $251; P(price > current) 46%. P10–P90: $146–$406.

DCF — the cash-flow anchor

Independent of the market multiple: a 5-year path, WACC 8.5%, 21.0x terminal FCF multiple → $191. This anchor is deliberately the heaviest (47%): it is the valuation least hostage to the current multiple regime.

Independent DCF. WACC 8.5%, 21.0x terminal → <img src=
Independent DCF. WACC 8.5%, 21.0x terminal → $191.

Peer benchmarking — relative value

Against the peer cohort, re-rating to the peer-median EV/Revenue multiple implies $22.77; the peer-median forward P/E is 16.2x, but the engine carries no P/E-implied price for this name (no forward-EPS basis at the peer step). A premium is only justified by superior growth/margins; otherwise it is multiple risk. Excluded from the weighted blend — shown only as a market cross-check.

Cross-sectional peer benchmarking. Peer-median EV/Rev re-rate → $22.77 (peer-median fwd P/E 16.2x; no P/E-implied price).
Cross-sectional peer benchmarking. Peer-median EV/Rev re-rate → $22.77 (peer-median fwd P/E 16.2x; no P/E-implied price).

Across all anchors the spread is 118% of the median — wide (genuine disagreement — the blend carries low valuation confidence).

Reasons the Thesis Could Fail (Falsifiable)

Pre-registered signals that would break the thesis — each polices a specific scenario boundary and is checked at every earnings update:

  • Organic revenue growth / order backlog < flat-to-negative for two consecutive quarters (2 consecutive prints). Sustained demand rollover breaks the base case toward the recession scenario.
  • FY revenue ($B) < 1.35 (next reported fiscal year). (rationale withheld pending re-authoring — frozen figure or verdict)

  • INFERENCE: Triangulated FV $245 (-6% vs spot · triangulated FV); the rating tracks the Monte-Carlo + scenario-PWEV core; the cash-flow anchor sits below the multiple-discipline core.
  • SPECULATION: At current prices the embedded bet is that the market keeps paying the current multiple through the capex cycle — a regime call the engine cannot verify from fundamentals alone.

Options Intelligence

Preferred structure: Covered Call. The selector reads the equity view (direction) and the volatility surface — nothing here re-prices the chain.

  • range-bound with fair premium — harvest income against a holding
  • Direction neutral from the overlay conviction/rating (read-only input).
  • IV/RV at the 66th percentile of the cross-section → mid vol bucket. This is the measure that selects the structure above: it ranks how rich this name's implied vol is against its own realised vol, relative to other names.
  • Reported alongside and not used to select: this name's own ATM IV sits at the 75th percentile of its own month-end history (decile 8). The two measures disagree here — vol is high for this name by its own history while its options are not unusually rich against its realised vol. Where they diverge, the cross-sectional measure is the one acting.
  • IV term structure is in contango (longer-dated richer, slope +2.0pp) — favour longer-dated ownership (LEAPS) or calendars that are long the cheaper front.

IV term structure (contango, slope +2.0pp): 38-DTE 40% · 101-DTE 42% · 500-DTE 42%

Options Overlay

A defined-risk way to express the HOLD equity view. Chain as of 2026-09-08 — end-of-day marks — indicative, not executable quotes.

Market signals — ATM IV 40.5% (moderate regime) · expected move ±10.4% (2026-10-16) · put/call OI 0.57 · ATM Δ 0.55 / Θ -0.19 / ν 0.33. Direction: NEUTRAL (implied return -6.2% to triangulated fair value $245.26).

Covered Call (if held) (Income / neutral) — Short 280 C · 2026-10-16 · premium $7.3 · yield 2.8% · priced from the listed chain (EOD marks)

Converts a near-fair holding into income by agreeing to sell at a higher strike — worth weighing when upside looks limited near fair value and being called away is acceptable. Illustrative — no outcome is implied or guaranteed.

Put Spread (income) (Income / would-own) — Short 240 P / Long 220 P · 2026-10-16 · net $2.75 · net entry $237.25 · yield 1.1% · RoR 16.0% · max loss $17.25 · priced from the listed chain (EOD marks)

Gets paid to wait for a lower entry, with the tail capped: the sold put collects premium while the cheaper long wing below it caps the maximum loss at the spread width — a defined-risk alternative to a naked cash-secured put.

Protective Collar (if held) (Hedge) — Long 240 P / Short 290 C · 2027-04-16 · net $5.0 · floor -8.0% · cap +11.0% · priced from the listed chain (EOD marks)

For a holder who wants to stay invested but cap risk: the sold call funds most of the protective put, fencing the position into a band — a way to ride out a de-rating without selling.

Indicative options structures — a defined-risk expression of the equity view, model-and-market illustrated from the last-close chain. NOT personalised advice or an executable quote; premiums, IV and greeks move intraday. Options carry the risk of total loss of premium. Not a registered financial adviser.

Rating Bridge

Rating = HOLD because:

  • Probability-weighted scenario value implies +22% vs spot
  • Monte Carlo median implies -4% vs spot
  • DCF fair value implies -27% vs spot — but this is terminal-value sensitive (exit-multiple $191 vs Gordon $162, 15% apart), so it carries less weight
  • Bear case (Structural — Permian Decline / Royalty Erosion) downside is -51% vs spot
  • Net: the valuation anchor itself sits 6.2% below spot, so there is no reward leg to weigh against the bear case and the reward-to-risk ratio is withheld rather than computed off a negative upside. The rating is not asymmetric enough for a Buy and not impaired enough for a Sell — hence Hold.

FY+2 $2B $1B $1B $1B

FY+4 $2B $1B $1B $1B
FY+5 $2B $1B $1B $1B
Terminal $1B × 21.0x $13B

WACC 8.5% · Σ PV(FCF) $3B + PV(terminal) $13B = EV $17B; − net debt $0.4B → equity $16B ÷ diluted shares $0.09B = $191/share (exit-multiple terminal).

  • Gordon terminal at 2.5% → $162/share — a genuinely non-multiple, cash-based cross-check; the exit-multiple and Gordon values bracket the terminal-value risk.

Disclosures & Limitations

This report is for informational and research purposes only. It is not personalised investment advice and does not consider any investor's objectives, financial situation, risk tolerance, tax position, or liquidity needs.

  • This report is produced by the MCH Advisory quantitative research engine — valuation, scenarios, Monte Carlo and the decision layer are generated systematically from the disclosed inputs and the archetype/industry driver sets, and reviewed rather than written name-by-name. Every figure reconciles to the appendix and every score exposes its inputs.
  • No suitability assessment has been performed for any individual.
  • Market data may be delayed or inaccurate; figures are as of the analysis date.
  • Model outputs (fair values, targets, scenario probabilities) are estimates and may be wrong.
  • Forecasts are uncertain; past performance is not indicative of future returns.
  • The author or publisher may hold positions in securities mentioned.
  • Users should verify information against primary sources (company filings) before acting.
  • Investing involves risk of loss; there is no guarantee any target price is achieved.
  • Ratings follow a defined research methodology (12-month expected-return thresholds), not individual circumstances.

Forecast record. Across 480 pre-registered anchors, the direction implied by our targets has been right 44.1% of the time — below the 50% a coin flip would give, with a Brier score of 0.266 against 0.25 for that same coin flip (lower is better). The tier-level picture is mixed: sector-relative alpha on SELL calls excludes zero, on BUY calls it does not, and the flattering aggregate is carried by HOLD, which counts as a hit merely for tracking its benchmark. Read the target below with that in mind — and see the full accuracy record. Samples are thin and windows short; nothing here is settled in either direction.
