Defensive: rating SELL; triangulated fair value $112 (-13% vs spot) — the risk/reward is skewed to the downside on Gross Margin. The debate is Gross Margin — a fundamental call.

02Thesis, Anti-Thesis & Variant View

Investment Thesis

At $128 (9 September 2026) Dollar General trades on 18x forward earnings, well under the staples-retail peer median. The market is pricing a low-growth, margin-fragile discounter: modest comparable sales, an operating margin of 5.0%, and little credit for e-commerce, membership or retail media. The engine broadly agrees rather than dissents. The probability-weighted value of $115 and the twelve-month target of $115 sit close to the market price, the Monte Carlo puts the probability of finishing above the current price just under a coin flip, and the cash-flow anchors sit well below market, a reminder of how little margin of safety the cash flows offer once a continuing store-build capital programme and net debt of ~$14.4B are carried. The triangulated fair value of $112 leaves a gap of -13% to spot, so the shares are trading rich to that anchor. SELL follows: the base case, which holds a plurality of the probability, is nearly fully priced, while the bear scenarios pull the weighted target back to spot. The single most damaging risk is gross-margin compression, to which the variance decomposition assigns almost all of the outcome dispersion, arriving through markdowns, shrink and consumables mix.

Narrative drafted 2026-08-16 by claude-opus-5 under supervision; reviewed by Marinus 2026-08-16.

The dashboard below is the whole argument on one page: spot ($128) against each valuation anchor, the scenario tree, technicals and the options-implied move.

Integrated dashboard. The two weighted valuation anchors bracket the $128 spot from $47.04 to $115 — stretched — spot sits above the skeptical blend.

Anti-Thesis (The Real Bear Case)

The structural bear does not need a recession. Dollar stores sit at the wrong end of two grinding forces: mass retail and e-commerce compressing price umbrellas in consumables, and a low-income customer whose real spending funds ever-smaller baskets. The operating margin has already settled at 5.0%; shrink, markdowns and wage inflation behave as structural costs, not cyclical ones. If comparable sales require sustained price investment to defend traffic, gross margin erodes while a large rural store base cannot be rationalised quickly. Earnings settle materially lower and the multiple de-rates to a trough level, putting the shares below the 52-week low. A balance sheet carrying net debt of ~$14.4B then removes the buyback shield that supported the share count through prior downturns, which matters because per-share growth rather than absolute profit growth has been carrying the equity story.

Key Debate

Gross Margin explains 88% of Monte Carlo outcome variance — the single variable that decides which side is right.

What the Market Is Pricing In

At the current price, the market pays 17.3× consensus forward EPS, vs the house DCF terminal 14.0×, and a peer median 28.8×. The house DCF sits 63% below spot, so the market is pricing in more than the house case — roughly 2.9pp of revenue CAGR.

Variant perception: the house view is below-consensus, and the thesis is primarily event-driven.

03Scenario & Valuation

Scenario Analysis

The scenario tree spans a structural 'Structural — Margin Compression / E-Com Disruption' downside ($61.50) to a 'Bull — Defensive Re-Rate' bull case ($176); the probability-weighted blend (PWEV $115) is -10% versus spot.

Scenario Probability Target Return vs spot
Structural — Margin Compression / E-Com Disruption 20% $61.50 -52%
Consumer-Spending Recession 17% $94.70 -26%
Base — Comps + Share Gains 35% $121 -5%
Growth — E-Com / Membership / Retail Media 20% $153 +20%
Bull — Defensive Re-Rate 8% $176 +37%
Probability-Weighted (PWEV) $115 -10%

Share-count charge: none applied. The probability-weighted value above is the gross per-share figure — no annual dilution is deducted — stock-based compensation runs at 0.2% of revenue; free cash flow net of SBC is $2.30B. SBC is therefore disclosed, not charged: read the per-share figures as before dilution.

Scenario rationale — the driver path behind every target:

  • Structural — Margin Compression / E-Com Disruption (20%, $61.50). Structural impairment — margin compression / channel disruption: earnings AND the multiple compress together. Target sits below the 52-week low by construction.
  • Consumer-Spending Recession (17%, $94.70). Cyclical downturn — staples demand + comps/case volume + gross margin + channel mix weakens for 1–2 years before normalising.
  • Base — Comps + Share Gains (35%, $121). Mid-cycle — normalised staples demand + comps/case volume + gross margin + channel mix; disciplined capital allocation; steady returns.
  • Growth — E-Com / Membership / Retail Media (20%, $153). Upside — digital + membership + mix lifts earnings above mid-cycle; the multiple expands modestly.
  • Bull — Defensive Re-Rate (8%, $176). Upside tail — sustained tight conditions or a structural re-rate on digital + membership + mix.
Five-scenario tree. Probability-weighted targets around the <img src=
Five-scenario tree. Probability-weighted targets around the $128 spot; PWEV $115 (-10% vs spot · 12m). the payoff shows modest negative expectancy — downside mass dominates (range $61.50–$176)

Valuation Triangulation

Two weighted anchors — a scenario-weighted pwev and a monte carlo median (student-t + regime switching) — read them with their basis in mind. The Monte Carlo, the DCF terminal and any peer re-rate key off a market multiple, so they are not fully independent; only discounted cash flows themselves are genuinely multiple-free. The discipline is to read the spread and weight the cash-based view, not to treat two numbers as two independent votes.

Method Basis Fair Value vs Spot Weight in this name's blend
Monte Carlo median (Student-t + regime) multiple $105 -18% 37% (declared 15%)
Peer EV/Revenue re-rate multiple $201 +57% 0% — cross-check only
Scenario PWEV multiple $115 -10% 62% (declared 25%)
DCF (5-year + terminal) cash flow + terminal × $47.04 -63% 0% — excluded
Triangulated (weighted) $112 -13% 100%

The house blend DECLARES five anchor weights — DCF 35%, scenario PWEV 25%, Monte Carlo 15%, sum-of-parts 15%, peer re-rate 10%. For this name DCF, sum-of-parts, peer P/E re-rate are not computed, so 60% of the declared weight is redistributed across the anchors that exist — which is why the weights above differ from the declared ones. The fair value is unaffected by this disclosure; the blend has always worked this way.

Peer EV/Revenue re-rate — 0% weight: it duplicates the peer-multiple information already carried by the Peer P/E anchor while ignoring margin mix; weighting both would double-count the peer view. Shown as a cross-check.

DCF excluded from the weighted blend — diverges >55% from the Monte-Carlo / scenario core. For a high-leverage equity the per-share DCF (enterprise value less large net debt) is hypersensitive to the terminal multiple; a peer re-rate across heterogeneous margins is apples-to-oranges. Shown above for reference; the blend leans on the multiple-discipline and scenario anchors.

Monte Carlo — the outcome distribution

10,000 paths, Student-t shocks (fat tails) with a regime-switching overlay. The median lands at $105 and 42% of paths finish above spot. The variance decomposition shows the gross margin is the dominant swing factor (88% of variance). The fundamental driver, not the multiple, sets the spread — a cleaner setup.

Monte Carlo distribution. Median <img src=
Monte Carlo distribution. Median $105; P(price > current) 42%.

DCF — the cash-flow anchor

Independent of the market multiple: a 5-year path, WACC 8.0%, 14.0x terminal FCF multiple → $47.04. Excluded from the weighted blend as an outlier — retained as an independent cross-check on the multiple-driven anchors.

Independent DCF. WACC 8.0%, 14.0x terminal → $47.04.
Independent DCF. WACC 8.0%, 14.0x terminal → $47.04.

Peer benchmarking — relative value

Against the peer cohort, re-rating to the peer-median EV/Revenue multiple implies $201; the peer-median forward P/E is 28.8x, but the engine carries no P/E-implied price for this name (no forward-EPS basis at the peer step). A premium is only justified by superior growth/margins; otherwise it is multiple risk. Excluded from the weighted blend — shown only as a market cross-check.

Cross-sectional peer benchmarking. Peer-median EV/Rev re-rate → $201 (peer-median fwd P/E 28.8x; no P/E-implied price).
Cross-sectional peer benchmarking. Peer-median EV/Rev re-rate → $201 (peer-median fwd P/E 28.8x; no P/E-implied price).

Across all anchors the spread is 133% of the median — wide (genuine disagreement — the blend carries low valuation confidence).

06Risks & Falsification
Issue Probability Valuation sensitivity Horizon
Local zoning / store-saturation moratoria and OSHA safety-fine settlements constraining new-store growth and raising compliance cost medium (~35%) low - slows unit growth and adds cost but manageable, ~2-3% of FV 12-24m
Minimum-wage increases and labour regulation raising store-level operating costs medium (~40%) medium - thin ~5% margins are highly sensitive to wage inflation, ~3-5% of FV 12-24m

Probabilities and sensitivities are analyst estimates, not market-implied.

Scenario Macro & Key Risks

Scenario Macro assumption Key risk
Structural — Margin Compression / E-Com Disruption Structural margin compression: shrink, wage inflation and Walmart/e-commerce encroachment permanently reset operating margin lower; earnings and multiple compress together Walmart and hard-discounters permanently take share of the low-income wallet, capping comps and pricing
Consumer-Spending Recession Consumer-spending recession squeezes the core low-income customer, cutting traffic and basket for 1-2 years Trade-down benefit is outweighed by an income shock to the captive customer base
Growth — E-Com / Membership / Retail Media Adjacencies scale: e-commerce, membership and retail media add incremental higher-margin revenue on top of the store base Digital/media initiatives stay sub-scale and fail to move consolidated margin
Bull — Defensive Re-Rate Defensive re-rate as a recession-resilient discounter with restored margins is rewarded toward staples peers The defensive premium fails to materialise while margin recovery underdelivers

Probability-Weighted Return Profile

Horizon: 1 year — at this horizon CAGR equals total return by definition. Expected values are the probability-weighted sums over the full scenario set below.

Scenario Probability Target Total return Contribution
Structural — Margin Compression / E-Com Disruption 20% $61.50 -51.9% -10.4pp
Consumer-Spending Recession 17% $94.70 -25.9% -4.4pp
Base — Comps + Share Gains 35% $121 -5.3% -1.9pp
Growth — E-Com / Membership / Retail Media 20% $153 +19.6% +3.9pp
Bull — Defensive Re-Rate 8% $176 +37.3% +3.0pp
Aggregate Value
Expected return (gross, 1y) -9.7%
Expected return net of SBC dilution -9.7%
Outcome dispersion (σ, from MC p10–p90) 82.9%
Expected Sharpe (rf 4%) -0.17
Downside expectation (prob-weighted loss branches) -16.6%

The gross expected return is the probability-weighted scenario return (it reconciles to the gross PWEV); the diluted figure applies the SBC share-count charge and matches the published PWEV-based target.

Expected Alpha

Expected return minus the return this name is REQUIRED to deliver for its risk (1-year horizon). Constants are pre-registered (preregistered-static (amendment #2, 2026-07-29); not fitted to MCH outcomes).

Component Value
Expected return (gross, 1y) -9.7%
Risk-free rate 4.12% (1y proxy (3m/2y midpoint; AV lacks a 1y tenor), as of 2026-09-03)
Beta (shrunk, 1y vs SPY) 0.69 (as of 2026-09-08)
Equity risk premium 4.5%
Required return 7.2%
Expected alpha -16.9%
Alpha per unit risk (EA/σ) -0.20

A negative expected alpha does not change the rating — it says the expected return does not clear the risk-adjusted hurdle at today's price. Rating mechanics are unchanged by this section.

Probability Cross-Checks

Not authoritative. The scenario probabilities in this report are AUTHORED — a judgement about how the world might go, not a measurement. Nothing below modifies them, the target, the rating or any position size. These checks ask only whether anything outside our own model agrees with us; where it does not, that is information for the reader, not a correction we have quietly applied.

Cross-check Ours Comparator Reading
Scenario spread vs options market 27.5% (1σ) 28.5% implied broadly consistent with the market's implied uncertainty

Realised scenario frequency 34 dated anchors 34 dated anchors available; realised-vs-prior comparison is now meaningful.

Authored set: 5 scenarios, probabilities summing to 1.0, mean target $115.41.

Options Intelligence

Preferred structure: Protective Put. The selector reads the equity view (direction) and the volatility surface — nothing here re-prices the chain.

  • bearish/holder — hedge the position; a collar finances the put by capping upside
  • Direction bearish from the overlay conviction/rating (read-only input).
  • IV/RV at the 36th percentile of the cross-section → mid vol bucket. This is the measure that selects the structure above: it ranks how rich this name's implied vol is against its own realised vol, relative to other names.
  • Reported alongside and not used to select: this name's own ATM IV sits at the 67th percentile of its own month-end history (decile 7). The two measures disagree here — vol is high for this name by its own history while its options are not unusually rich against its realised vol. Where they diverge, the cross-sectional measure is the one acting.
  • IV term structure is in contango (longer-dated richer, slope +4.8pp) — favour longer-dated ownership (LEAPS) or calendars that are long the cheaper front.
  • No live-chain Protective Put was priced for this name — shown as the indicated strategy; size against a freshly pulled chain.

IV term structure (contango, slope +4.8pp): 31-DTE 35% · 101-DTE 39% · 374-DTE 40%

No live-chain Protective Put was priced for this name — shown as the indicated approach; size against a fresh chain.

Alternatives: Collar, Put Debit Spread. IV rank shown via the name's own monthly IV history (advisory); structure selected on the cross-sectional IV/RV percentile. Options Overlay

A defined-risk way to express the SELL equity view. Chain as of 2026-09-08 — end-of-day marks — indicative, not executable quotes.

Market signals — ATM IV 34.7% (moderate regime) · expected move ±8.3% (2026-10-09) · put/call OI 1.34 · ATM Δ 0.53 / Θ -0.09 / ν 0.15. Direction: NEUTRAL (implied return -12.7% to triangulated fair value $111.62).

Covered Call (if held) (Income / neutral) — Short 135 C · 2026-10-16 · premium $2.5 · yield 2.0% · priced from the listed chain (EOD marks)

Converts a near-fair holding into income by agreeing to sell at a higher strike — worth weighing when upside looks limited near fair value and being called away is acceptable. Illustrative — no outcome is implied or guaranteed.

Put Spread (income) (Income / would-own) — Short 120 P / Long 110 P · 2026-10-16 · net $1.78 · net entry $118.22 · yield 1.5% · RoR 22.0% · max loss $8.21 · priced from the listed chain (EOD marks)

Gets paid to wait for a lower entry, with the tail capped: the sold put collects premium while the cheaper long wing below it caps the maximum loss at the spread width — a defined-risk alternative to a naked cash-secured put.

Protective Collar (if held) (Hedge) — Long 115 P / Short 140 C · 2027-03-19 · net $2.28 · floor -10.0% · cap +9.0% · priced from the listed chain (EOD marks)

For a holder who wants to stay invested but cap risk: the sold call funds most of the protective put, fencing the position into a band — a way to ride out a de-rating without selling.

Indicative options structures — a defined-risk expression of the equity view, model-and-market illustrated from the last-close chain. NOT personalised advice or an executable quote; premiums, IV and greeks move intraday. Options carry the risk of total loss of premium. Not a registered financial adviser.

Rating Bridge

Rating = SELL because:

  • Probability-weighted scenario value implies -10% vs spot
  • Monte Carlo median implies -18% vs spot
  • DCF fair value implies -63% vs spot — but this is terminal-value sensitive (exit-multiple $47.04 vs Gordon $73.88, 57% apart), so it carries less weight
  • Bear case (Structural — Margin Compression / E-Com Disruption) downside is -52% vs spot
  • Net: the valuation anchor itself sits 12.7% below spot, so there is no reward leg to weigh against the bear case and the reward-to-risk ratio is withheld rather than computed off a negative upside. The rating warrants a Sell.

DCF — line items

FY+4 $51B $3B $1B $1B $2B $1B
FY+5 $53B $3B $2B $1B $2B $1B
Terminal $2B × 14.0x $18B

FCF is bridged: NOPAT + D&A − Capex − ΔNWC (capex intensity 3% of revenue, weighted from the segments) — not a single conversion fudge.

WACC 8.0% · Σ PV(FCF) $7B + PV(terminal) $18B = EV $25B; − net debt $14.4B → equity $10B ÷ diluted shares $0.22B = $47.04/share (exit-multiple terminal).

  • Gordon terminal at 2.5% → $73.88/share — a genuinely non-multiple, cash-based cross-check; the exit-multiple and Gordon values bracket the terminal-value risk.
  • Incremental ROIC on the forecast capex ≈ 6% vs WACC 8.0% → below WACC — the incremental build is value-dilutive.

Disclosures & Limitations

This report is for informational and research purposes only. It is not personalised investment advice and does not consider any investor's objectives, financial situation, risk tolerance, tax position, or liquidity needs.

  • This report is produced by the MCH Advisory quantitative research engine — valuation, scenarios, Monte Carlo and the decision layer are generated systematically from the disclosed inputs and the archetype/industry driver sets, and reviewed rather than written name-by-name. Every figure reconciles to the appendix and every score exposes its inputs.
  • No suitability assessment has been performed for any individual.
  • Market data may be delayed or inaccurate; figures are as of the analysis date.
  • Model outputs (fair values, targets, scenario probabilities) are estimates and may be wrong.

  • The author or publisher may hold positions in securities mentioned.
  • Users should verify information against primary sources (company filings) before acting.

  • Ratings follow a defined research methodology (12-month expected-return thresholds), not individual circumstances.

Forecast record. Across 480 pre-registered anchors, the direction implied by our targets has been right 44.1% of the time — below the 50% a coin flip would give, with a Brier score of 0.266 against 0.25 for that same coin flip (lower is better). The tier-level picture is mixed: sector-relative alpha on SELL calls excludes zero, on BUY calls it does not, and the flattering aggregate is carried by HOLD, which counts as a hit merely for tracking its benchmark. Read the target below with that in mind — and see the full accuracy record. Samples are thin and windows short; nothing here is settled in either direction.
