EPS basis for the forward P/E and all scenario multiples: consensus forward EPS (broker-adjusted, non-GAAP).

Methodology: Valuation triangulated across four weighted anchors — an intrinsic DCF, a scenario-weighted PWEV, a Monte Carlo median (Student-t + regime switching) and a peer P/E re-rate. Anchors are blended at fixed declared weights, each counted separately; the Monte Carlo, the scenario PWEV and the DCF's exit-multiple terminal all rest on the same base multiple, so where they agree it is partly by construction — not independent corroboration. Figures reconciled to Alpha Vantage 2026-10-12. Each chart below sits with the part of the thesis it evidences.

Defensive: rating SELL; triangulated fair value $92.23 (-49% vs spot) — the risk/reward is skewed to the downside on Gross Margin. The debate is Gross Margin — a fundamental call.

02Thesis, Anti-Thesis & Variant View

Investment Thesis

At $180 (13 October 2026) Coinbase trades on roughly 85x forward earnings, a multiple far above the listed-exchange peer median. The market is treating crypto transaction fees as a growing annuity and paying a data-compounder rating for them, with recurring subscription income assumed to carry earnings through any downturn. The engine disagrees across every independent measure. The capex-bridge discounted cash flow lands well beneath the tape even on a constructive revenue path, and lower still on a Gordon terminal; the peer-median forward multiple implies less again. The shares are trading rich to a triangulated fair value of $92.23, a gap of -49%, with the probability-weighted expected value at $114 and the twelve-month target set from it at $114. Margin volatility, not revenue, drives the majority of modelled outcome variance: an operating margin near 11% (reported GAAP, TTM to Jun 2026) leaves very little absorption for a bad quarter, and net cash of ~$2.2B is not a large buffer for a business geared to activity. The SELL rating follows. The single most damaging risk is a fee-and-volume double hit, in which a downturn compresses earnings and the multiple at once, and the 52-week low sits only modestly beneath the current price, leaving little drawdown already discounted.

Anti-Thesis (The Real Bear Case)

The structural bear case does not require a crypto winter, only fee normalisation. Coinbase earns a blended retail take rate that zero-commission brokers, offshore exchanges and decentralised venues undercut by an order of magnitude. If price competition arrives while volumes plateau, transaction revenue declines even in a flat market. Subscription income does not fully offset that: stablecoin interest is rate-sensitive and its economics are shared with the issuer, so a falling-rate environment shrinks the recurring pillar at the same moment. On that mechanism revenue contracts materially, an operating margin already near 11% (reported GAAP, TTM to Jun 2026) compresses further, and the market stops paying a growth rating for what is in truth a cyclical toll booth. The structural scenario target sits far below the 52-week low, and at roughly a fifth of the probability it dominates the downside of the blend. Nothing in the chain requires a scandal or a breach — only competition doing to a spread what competition does.

Key Debate

Gross Margin explains 56% of Monte Carlo outcome variance — the single variable that decides which side is right.

What the Market Is Pricing In

Consensus forward EPS is -1.82, so the current price implies no earnings multiple to compare against (the peer median forward P/E is 19.3×). The house DCF sits 57% below spot, so the market is pricing in more than the house case — roughly 7.0pp of revenue CAGR.

Variant perception: the house view is below-consensus, and the thesis is primarily growth-driven.

EPS -1.8 2.1 Medium

03Scenario & Valuation

Scenario Analysis

The scenario tree spans a structural 'Structural — Volume / Subscription Decline / Competition' downside ($51.40) to a 'Bull — Re-Rate' bull case ($206); the probability-weighted blend (PWEV $114) is -37% versus spot.

Scenario Probability Target Return vs spot
Structural — Volume / Subscription Decline / Competition 20% $51.40 -72%
Market-Activity Recession 17% $87.30 -52%
Base — Recurring Data + Volume Growth 35% $121 -33%
Growth — New Data / Index / Analytics 20% $163 -9%
Bull — Re-Rate 8% $206 +14%
Probability-Weighted (PWEV, after SBC dilution) — $114 -37%

SBC charge: scenario targets are gross per-share prices; the PWEV is reduced by one year of stock-based-compensation dilution (2.5% of shares, on SBC ≈ 12% of revenue), trimming the gross PWEV of $117 to $114 (-2.4%). SBC is charged once, as dilution — never also deducted from FCF.

Scenario rationale — the driver path behind every target:

  • Structural — Volume / Subscription Decline / Competition (20%, $51.40). Structural impairment — volume / subscription decline / competition: earnings AND the multiple compress together. Target sits below the 52-week low by construction.
  • Market-Activity Recession (17%, $87.30). Cyclical downturn — trading volumes + recurring data/index/ratings subscriptions + pricing power weakens for 1–2 years before normalising.
  • Base — Recurring Data + Volume Growth (35%, $121). Mid-cycle — normalised trading volumes + recurring data/index/ratings subscriptions + pricing power; disciplined capital allocation; steady returns.
  • Growth — New Data / Index / Analytics (20%, $163). Upside — new data / index / analytics lifts earnings above mid-cycle; the multiple expands modestly.
  • Bull — Re-Rate (8%, $206). Upside tail — sustained tight conditions or a structural re-rate on new data / index / analytics.

Valuation Triangulation

Four weighted anchors — an intrinsic dcf, a scenario-weighted pwev, a monte carlo median (student-t + regime switching) and a peer p/e re-rate — read them with their basis in mind. The Monte Carlo, the scenario PWEV, any DCF's exit-multiple terminal and any peer re-rate key off a market multiple, so they are not independent; only a DCF's explicit-period cash flows are multiple-free, and its terminal usually carries most of its value. The discipline is to read the spread, not to treat four numbers as four independent votes.

Method Basis Fair Value vs Spot Weight in this name's blend
Monte Carlo median (Student-t + regime) multiple $98.96 -45% 19% (declared 15%)
Peer P/E re-rate multiple $40.85 -77% 3% (declared 10%)
Peer EV/Revenue re-rate multiple $230 +28% 0% — cross-check only
Scenario PWEV multiple $114 -37% 32% (declared 25%)
DCF (5-year + exit-multiple terminal) cash flow + terminal × $76.81 -57% 45% (declared 35%)
Triangulated (weighted) — $92.23 -49% 100%

The house blend DECLARES five anchor weights — DCF 35%, scenario PWEV 25%, Monte Carlo 15%, sum-of-parts 15%, peer re-rate 10%. For this name sum-of-parts is not computed, so 15% of the declared weight is redistributed across the anchors that exist — which is why the weights above differ from the declared ones. The fair value is unaffected by this disclosure; the blend has always worked this way. The company-lever row in the Sensitivity section is an illustrative EBIT × multiple value, not a sum-of-parts anchor.

Peer EV/Revenue re-rate — 0% weight: it duplicates the peer-multiple information already carried by the Peer P/E anchor while ignoring margin mix; weighting both would double-count the peer view. Shown as a cross-check.

Monte Carlo — the outcome distribution

10,000 paths, Student-t shocks (fat tails) with a regime-switching overlay. The median lands at $98.96 and 12% of paths finish above spot. The variance decomposition shows the gross margin is the dominant swing factor (56% of variance). The fundamental driver, not the multiple, sets the spread — a cleaner setup.

DCF — explicit-period cash flows with an exit-multiple terminal

A 5-year cash-flow path discounted at a WACC of 8.5%, plus a terminal value of final-year FCF × 30.0x — a terminal multiple equal to 0.85 × the base multiple that the Monte Carlo and the scenario tree also use → $76.81. The terminal value is 85% of enterprise value, so this anchor moves with the multiple assumption. The heaviest anchor in this blend (45%); because its terminal is a market multiple, it is not independent of the multiple-driven anchors.

DCF (exit-multiple terminal). WACC 8.5%, 30.0x terminal → $76.81; terminal 85% of EV.
DCF (exit-multiple terminal). WACC 8.5%, 30.0x terminal → $76.81; terminal 85% of EV.

Peer benchmarking — relative value

Against its 4 peers in the same GICS sub-industry, re-rating to their median forward multiple (P/E 19.3x) implies $40.85. A premium is only justified by superior growth/margins; otherwise it is multiple risk. Weighted just 3% so market sentiment does not set the fair value.

Cross-sectional peer benchmarking. Same-sub-industry median fwd P/E 19.3x → $40.85; EV/Rev re-rate → $230.
Cross-sectional peer benchmarking. Same-sub-industry median fwd P/E 19.3x → $40.85; EV/Rev re-rate → $230.

Across all anchors the spread is 192% of the median — wide (genuine disagreement — the blend carries low valuation confidence).

Downside to lowest scenario (Structural — Volume / Subscription Decline / Competition) $51.40 (-72% vs spot · bear scenario)

06Risks & Falsification
Issue Probability Valuation sensitivity Horizon
US market-structure / SEC classification of listed tokens as securities medium (~40%) high — an adverse token-listing ruling removes a slice of transaction volume; ~15-20% of FV 12-24m
Stablecoin reserve-interest regulation forcing pass-through of USDC yield medium (~35%) high — reserve-interest is a large, high-margin revenue line; loss is ~10-15% of FV 12-24m

Probabilities and sensitivities are analyst estimates, not market-implied.

Scenario Macro & Key Risks

Scenario Macro assumption Key risk
Market-Activity Recession A 1-2 year crypto-activity air-pocket (risk-off tape) cuts trading volumes before normalising; subscription income cushions but does not offset. Trading volume is far more cyclical than the recurring-revenue narrative implies, so earnings drop faster than consensus models.
Base — Recurring Data + Volume Growth Normalised crypto activity with a growing USDC/subscription annuity and disciplined capital allocation. The recurring leg stays too small to justify the premium multiple, leaving the name volume-geared.
Growth — New Data / Index / Analytics On-chain (Base), USDC and new index/analytics products scale into a durable revenue mix shift. Regulation caps stablecoin economics or a larger platform (a bank or card network) captures on-chain rails.
Bull — Re-Rate Crypto mainstreams and the market pays a durable-annuity multiple as recurring revenue dominates. Re-rate is pure multiple expansion with no fundamental support — the most fragile leg, reversible on one risk-off quarter.

  • Transaction revenue, year-on-year growth < -0.15 (2 consecutive prints). (rationale withheld pending re-authoring — frozen figure or verdict)
  • Subscription and services revenue, quarter-on-quarter growth < 0.0 (2 consecutive prints). The recurring pillar (stablecoin income, staking, custody, data) is what separates the base scenario from the structural bear; two sequential declines would show the annuity narrative failing while transaction revenue stays cyclical.
  • Blended retail take rate (retail transaction revenue / retail trading volume) < 0.012 (2 consecutive prints). (rationale withheld pending re-authoring — frozen figure or verdict)
  • USDC market capitalisation ($B) < 45 (2 consecutive prints). (rationale withheld pending re-authoring — frozen figure or verdict)
  • Adverse US regulatory or legislative action restricting core trading, staking or stablecoin income == occurrence (single event). A ruling or rule-making that removes staking or stablecoin distribution economics for US customers cuts recurring revenue in a way no cyclical recovery repairs, moving probability directly to the structural scenario.

Fact / Inference / Speculation

  • FACT: Spot $180; 52-week range $139–$373; engine rating SELL; house target $114 (-37%). (source: Alpha Vantage 2026-10-12, 13 October 2026)
  • INFERENCE: Triangulated FV $92.23 (-49% vs spot · triangulated FV); the rating tracks the Monte-Carlo + scenario-PWEV core; the DCF anchor sits below the multiple-discipline core.
  • SPECULATION: At current prices the embedded bet is that Gross Margin keeps surprising favourably — an operating call the next two prints will test.

Conviction Score

Research Conviction measures the strength and quality of the research setup — input coverage, financial quality, valuation support, process agreement. It is NOT the probability that the recommendation succeeds; the forecast track record section is the evidence on that.

50.8/100 (confidence band 35.9–65.8), 21st percentile of 928 covered names (as of 2026-10-12). Weighted composite under config ros-1.21.0 — every component and its inputs below.

Component Score (0–100) Weight Inputs
business quality 82 15% extended.fcf_quality.fcf_margin_pct, extended.balance_sheet.net_debt_to_ebitda, extended.accounting_quality.cash_conversion_pct
financial strength 92 10% extended.balance_sheet.net_debt_to_ebitda, extended.balance_sheet.interest_coverage
valuation 13 15% upside_pct
growth 60 10% reconciliation.ttm_revenue_billions, reconciliation.fy_guide_revenue_billions
earnings visibility 38 10% extended.forecast_accuracy.eps_surprise.beat_rate_pct
moat 49 10% enrichment.moat.rating
technical trend (heuristic — no validation record; weight change reserved for AM-060) 47 10% technicals.rsi, technicals.sma_50, technicals.sma_200
macro tailwinds — 10% industry_context.scenario_states
risk profile 29 10% monte_carlo.prob_above_current, monte_carlo.p10, monte_carlo.p90, monte_carlo.median

Missing inputs (macro tailwinds) are excluded and the remaining weights renormalised; the confidence band widens accordingly.

Probability-Weighted Return Profile

Horizon: 1 year — at this horizon CAGR equals total return by definition. Expected values are the probability-weighted sums over the full scenario set below.

Scenario Probability Target Total return Contribution
Structural — Volume / Subscription Decline / Competition 20% $51.40 -71.5% -14.3pp
Market-Activity Recession 17% $87.30 -51.6% -8.8pp
Base — Recurring Data + Volume Growth 35% $121 -32.9% -11.5pp
Growth — New Data / Index / Analytics 20% $163 -9.5% -1.9pp
Bull — Re-Rate 8% $206 +14.4% +1.1pp
Aggregate Value
Expected return (gross, 1y) -35.3%
Expected return net of SBC dilution -36.9%
Outcome dispersion (σ, from MC p10–p90) 32.9%
Expected Sharpe (rf 4%) -1.19
Downside expectation (prob-weighted loss branches) -36.5%

The gross expected return is the probability-weighted scenario return (it reconciles to the gross PWEV); the diluted figure applies the SBC share-count charge and matches the published PWEV-based target.

Expected Alpha

Expected return minus the return this name is REQUIRED to deliver for its risk (1-year horizon). Constants are pre-registered (preregistered-static (amendment #2, 2026-07-29); not fitted to MCH outcomes).

Component Value
Expected return (gross, 1y) -35.3%
Risk-free rate 4.49% (1y proxy (3m/2y midpoint; AV lacks a 1y tenor), as of 2026-10-08)
Beta (shrunk, 1y vs SPY) 2.23 (as of 2026-10-12)
Equity risk premium 4.5%
Required return 14.5%
Expected alpha -49.8%
Alpha per unit risk (EA/σ) -1.51

A negative expected alpha does not change the rating — it says the expected return does not clear the risk-adjusted hurdle at today's price. Rating mechanics are unchanged by this section.

Probability Cross-Checks

Not authoritative. The scenario probabilities in this report are AUTHORED — a judgement about how the world might go, not a measurement. Nothing below modifies them, the target, the rating or any position size. These checks ask only whether anything outside our own model agrees with us; where it does not, that is information for the reader, not a correction we have quietly applied.

Cross-check Ours Comparator Reading
Scenario spread vs options market 25.3% (1σ) 51.3% implied broadly consistent with the market's implied uncertainty
Mass above spot: scenarios vs our own MC 8.0% 12.3% the two expressions of our own view agree
Realised scenario frequency 59 dated anchors — 59 dated anchors available; realised-vs-prior comparison is now meaningful.

Authored set: 5 scenarios, probabilities summing to 1.0, mean target $116.67.

Rating Bridge

Rating = SELL because:

  • Probability-weighted scenario value implies -37% vs spot
  • Monte Carlo median implies -45% vs spot
  • DCF fair value (exit-multiple terminal) implies -57% vs spot — but this is terminal-value sensitive (exit-multiple $76.81 vs Gordon $51.72, 33% apart), so it carries less weight
  • Bear case (Structural — Volume / Subscription Decline / Competition) downside is -72% vs spot
  • Net: the valuation anchor itself sits 48.9% below spot, so there is no reward leg to weigh against the bear case and the reward-to-risk ratio is withheld rather than computed off a negative upside. The rating warrants a Sell.

DCF — line items

Year Revenue Op income (house path) − Capex + D&A FCF PV(FCF)
FY+1 $7B $1B $0B $0B $1B $1B
FY+2 $7B $1B $0B $0B $1B $1B
FY+3 $8B $1B $0B $0B $1B $1B
FY+4 $8B $1B $0B $0B $1B $1B
FY+5 $9B $1B $0B $0B $1B $1B
Terminal — — — — $1B × 30.0x $15B

FCF is bridged: NOPAT + D&A − Capex − ΔNWC (capex intensity 3% of revenue, weighted from the segments) — not a single conversion fudge.

WACC 8.5% · Σ PV(FCF) $3B + PV(terminal) $15B = EV $18B; + net cash $2.2B → equity $20B ÷ diluted shares $0.27B = $76.81/share (exit-multiple terminal).

  • Gordon terminal → $51.72/share — a single-point perpetual-growth cross-check at g = 2.5% (one growth rate, not a range; it is not in the blend).
  • Incremental ROIC on the forecast capex ≈ 18% vs WACC 8.5% → above WACC — the build is value-creative.

Model Calibration Caveats

Raised by the model's own checks on its run of 13 October 2026 (prices as of 2026-10-12). They concern how the model was calibrated, not the company; read the figures they touch with them in mind.

  • The Monte Carlo gives only a 12% probability of the price finishing above today's; the house treats readings under 30% as a sign the downside assumptions may be too severe.

  • Ratings follow a defined research methodology (12-month expected-return thresholds), not individual circumstances.

Forecast record. Across 478 scored pre-registered anchors (of 480), the direction implied by our targets has been right 55.2% of the time, above the 50% a coin flip would give, by more than sampling noise at this sample size. Read as probabilities, the targets score worse than a coin flip: a proxy Brier score of 0.253 against 0.25 (lower is better); the probabilities are reconstructed from the price targets, because the engine only began publishing its own on 2026-08-04. By published rating, against each name’s sector ETF (a BUY counts as a hit when it beats it, a SELL when it trails it, a HOLD when it ends within 5 points of it): BUY: 40.0% hits, average alpha +8.9% on 5 scored; HOLD: 30.6%, −2.5% on 418; SELL: 61.4%, −1.1% on 44; STRONG SELL: 50.0%, −0.6% on 6. STRONG BUY: none of its 2 anchors could be scored. Read this page’s price target with that in mind, and see the full accuracy record. Samples are thin and windows short; nothing here is settled in either direction.
