EPS basis for the forward P/E and all scenario multiples: consensus forward EPS (broker-adjusted, non-GAAP).

Methodology: Valuation triangulated across four weighted anchors — an intrinsic DCF, a scenario-weighted PWEV, a Monte Carlo median (Student-t + regime switching) and a peer P/E re-rate. Anchors are blended at fixed declared weights, each counted separately; the Monte Carlo, the scenario PWEV and the DCF's exit-multiple terminal all rest on the same base multiple, so where they agree it is partly by construction — not independent corroboration. Figures reconciled to Alpha Vantage 2026-10-09. Each chart below sits with the part of the thesis it evidences.

Balanced: triangulated fair value $102 (-11% vs spot); the outcome hinges on P/E Multiple. The debate is P/E Multiple — fundamentally a multiple/regime call.

02Thesis, Anti-Thesis & Variant View

Investment Thesis

At $114 (10 October 2026) Blackstone trades on 19x forward earnings, well above the asset-manager peer median. That premium embeds a resumption of alternatives fundraising, mid-single-digit fee growth and recovering realisations. The engine is less generous. Probability-weighting the tree gives $112, and the triangulated fair value lands at $102, or -11% against the current price, leaving the shares fairly valued against that estimate; the simulated median sits further down and both discounted-cash-flow readings fall short of the market price. HOLD follows from the blend. The single most damaging risk is the structural scenario of fee compression with sustained outflows, whose target sits beneath the 52-week low.

Narrative drafted 2026-08-16 by claude-opus-5 under supervision; reviewed by Marinus 2026-08-16.

The dashboard below is the whole argument on one page: spot ($114) against each valuation anchor, the scenario tree, technicals and the options-implied move.

Integrated dashboard. The four weighted valuation anchors run from $95.50 to $112, all below the $114 spot — stretched — spot sits above the skeptical blend.

Anti-Thesis (The Real Bear Case)

The structural bear case carries the heaviest downside weight in the tree and works as follows. Rate normalisation removes the arithmetic that made private assets irresistible to allocators. Institutional limited partners, over-allocated after the denominator effect, consolidate commitments with fewer managers and negotiate fee rates down. Realisations stall, so carry — the earnings line the market capitalises most generously — dries up for years rather than quarters. Semi-liquid retail vehicles tip into net redemption, forcing gates that damage the distribution franchise permanently rather than cyclically. Fee-earning assets under management then shrink while the fee rate compresses, and the multiple de-rates alongside earnings because the growth premium was the multiple. On those mechanics the structural target below the 52-week low is not a tail sketch; it is the base arithmetic of a franchise repricing.

Key Debate

P/E Multiple explains 89% of Monte Carlo outcome variance — i.e. value is set by the multiple the market will pay, a rate/sentiment regime bet as much as an earnings bet.

What the Market Is Pricing In

At the current price, the market pays 19.0× consensus forward EPS, vs the house DCF terminal 16.0×, and a peer median 16.2×. The house DCF sits 16% below spot, so the market is pricing in more than the house case — roughly 1.7pp of revenue CAGR.

Variant perception: the house view is below-consensus, and the thesis is primarily event-driven.

03Scenario & Valuation

Scenario Analysis

The scenario tree spans a structural 'Structural — Fee Compression / Outflows / De-Rate' downside ($50.40) to a 'Bull — Re-Rate' bull case ($202); the probability-weighted blend (PWEV $112) is -2% versus spot.

Scenario Probability Target Return vs spot
Structural — Fee Compression / Outflows / De-Rate 20% $50.40 -56%
Market-Drawdown / Outflows 17% $85.90 -25%
Base — AUM + Fee Growth 35% $120 +5%
Growth — Alts / Private-Markets Inflows 20% $160 +40%
Bull — Re-Rate 8% $202 +76%
Probability-Weighted (PWEV, after SBC dilution) — $112 -2%

SBC charge: scenario targets are gross per-share prices; the PWEV is reduced by one year of stock-based-compensation dilution (2.5% of shares, on SBC ≈ 10% of revenue), trimming the gross PWEV of $115 to $112 (-2.4%). SBC is charged once, as dilution — never also deducted from FCF.

Scenario rationale — the driver path behind every target:

  • Structural — Fee Compression / Outflows / De-Rate (20%, $50.40). Structural impairment — fee compression / outflows / market de-rate: earnings AND the multiple compress together. Target sits below the 52-week low by construction.
  • Market-Drawdown / Outflows (17%, $85.90). Cyclical downturn — AUM (markets + flows) + fee rate + performance/carry (alts: fundraising momentum) weakens for 1–2 years before normalising.
  • Base — AUM + Fee Growth (35%, $120). Mid-cycle — normalised AUM (markets + flows) + fee rate + performance/carry (alts: fundraising momentum); disciplined capital allocation; steady returns.
  • Growth — Alts / Private-Markets Inflows (20%, $160). Upside — alts / private-markets inflows lifts earnings above mid-cycle; the multiple expands modestly.
  • Bull — Re-Rate (8%, $202). Upside tail — sustained tight conditions or a structural re-rate on alts / private-markets inflows.

Valuation Triangulation

Four weighted anchors — an intrinsic dcf, a scenario-weighted pwev, a monte carlo median (student-t + regime switching) and a peer p/e re-rate — read them with their basis in mind. The Monte Carlo, the scenario PWEV, any DCF's exit-multiple terminal and any peer re-rate key off a market multiple, so they are not independent; only a DCF's explicit-period cash flows are multiple-free, and its terminal usually carries most of its value. The discipline is to read the spread, not to treat four numbers as four independent votes.

Method Basis Fair Value vs Spot Weight in this name's blend
Monte Carlo median (Student-t + regime) multiple $104 -9% 18% (declared 15%)
Peer P/E re-rate multiple $97.65 -15% 12% (declared 10%)
Peer EV/Revenue re-rate multiple $38.21 -67% 0% — cross-check only
Scenario PWEV multiple $112 -2% 29% (declared 25%)
DCF (5-year + exit-multiple terminal) cash flow + terminal × $95.50 -16% 41% (declared 35%)
Triangulated (weighted) — $102 -11% 100%

The house blend DECLARES five anchor weights — DCF 35%, scenario PWEV 25%, Monte Carlo 15%, sum-of-parts 15%, peer re-rate 10%. For this name sum-of-parts is not computed, so 15% of the declared weight is redistributed across the anchors that exist — which is why the weights above differ from the declared ones. The fair value is unaffected by this disclosure; the blend has always worked this way. The company-lever row in the Sensitivity section is an illustrative EBIT × multiple value, not a sum-of-parts anchor.

Peer EV/Revenue re-rate — 0% weight: it duplicates the peer-multiple information already carried by the Peer P/E anchor while ignoring margin mix; weighting both would double-count the peer view. Shown as a cross-check.

Monte Carlo — the outcome distribution

10,000 paths, Student-t shocks (fat tails) with a regime-switching overlay. The median lands at $104 and 39% of paths finish above spot. The variance decomposition shows the p/e multiple is the dominant swing factor (89% of variance). Value is a multiple bet: fundamentals move the answer far less than the rating does.

Monte Carlo distribution. Median <img src=
Monte Carlo distribution. Median $104; P(price > current) 39%. P10–P90: $65.19–$154.

DCF — explicit-period cash flows with an exit-multiple terminal

A 5-year cash-flow path discounted at a WACC of 10.0%, plus a terminal value of final-year FCF × 16.0x — a terminal multiple equal to 0.85 × the base multiple that the Monte Carlo and the scenario tree also use → $95.50. The terminal value is 75% of enterprise value, so this anchor moves with the multiple assumption. The heaviest anchor in this blend (41%); because its terminal is a market multiple, it is not independent of the multiple-driven anchors.

DCF (exit-multiple terminal). WACC 10.0%, 16.0x terminal → $95.50; terminal 75% of EV.
DCF (exit-multiple terminal). WACC 10.0%, 16.0x terminal → $95.50; terminal 75% of EV.

Peer benchmarking — relative value

Against its 4 peers in the same GICS sub-industry, re-rating to their median forward multiple (P/E 16.2x) implies $97.65. A premium is only justified by superior growth/margins; otherwise it is multiple risk. Weighted just 12% so market sentiment does not set the fair value.

Cross-sectional peer benchmarking. Same-sub-industry median fwd P/E 16.2x → $97.65; EV/Rev re-rate → $38.21.
Cross-sectional peer benchmarking. Same-sub-industry median fwd P/E 16.2x → $97.65; EV/Rev re-rate → $38.21.

Across all anchors the spread is 76% of the median — wide (genuine disagreement — the blend carries low valuation confidence).

Scenario Macro & Key Risks

Scenario Macro assumption Key risk
Structural — Fee Compression / Outflows / De-Rate Secular private-markets fee compression, retail/perpetual competition and a prolonged fundraising winter with weak realizations. FRE growth stalls and the fee rate erodes, collapsing the three-turn premium to peers.
Market-Drawdown / Outflows Equity/credit drawdown cuts mark-linked AUM, triggers perpetual-vehicle redemptions and freezes realizations. Simultaneous AUM decline, redemption pressure and zero carry compress earnings sharply.
Base — AUM + Fee Growth Steady private-markets allocation, mid-single-digit fee growth, gradual realization recovery. The premium multiple already prices this, leaving little margin of safety.
Growth — Alts / Private-Markets Inflows Institutional and retail allocation to alternatives accelerates; strong flagship closes and rising fee-earning AUM. Deployment at cycle-high asset prices lowers future returns and re-up momentum.
Bull — Re-Rate Realizations reopen, retail perpetual flows surge and the market re-rates FRE durability. Re-rate is highly sensitive to any single quarter of weak flows or gated redemptions.

Reasons the Thesis Could Fail (Falsifiable)

Pre-registered signals that would break the thesis — each polices a specific scenario boundary and is checked at every earnings update:

  • Fee-related earnings (FRE), YoY growth < 0.015 (2 consecutive prints). Midpoint of the base fee-growth path (6 per cent) and the market-drawdown path (minus 3 per cent). Two prints of FRE growth below 1.5 per cent says the AUM-plus-fee-rate engine behind the base case is not delivering.
  • Fee-earning AUM, QoQ change ($B) < 0 (2 consecutive prints). Fee-earning AUM is the fee base itself. Two sequential contractions mean outflows and markdowns are outrunning fundraising, the direct mechanism of the structural scenario.
  • Quarterly gross inflows ($B) < 20 (2 consecutive prints). (rationale withheld pending re-authoring — frozen figure or verdict)
  • Perpetual retail vehicles (BREIT/BCRED) net flows < 0 (single event). A quarter in which repurchase requests exceed new subscriptions restarts the redemption-gate cycle. Gating is discrete and damages the retail distribution franchise beyond the quarter it occurs in.
  • Segment operating margin (distributable-earnings basis) < 0.64 (2 consecutive prints). Midpoint of the base margin (67.2 per cent) and the drawdown-path margin (61 per cent). Sustained erosion below 64 per cent signals fee-rate compression or negative operating leverage, not seasonal mix.

  • SPECULATION: At current prices the embedded bet is that the market keeps paying the current multiple through the capex cycle — a regime call the engine cannot verify from fundamentals alone.

Conviction Score

Research Conviction measures the strength and quality of the research setup — input coverage, financial quality, valuation support, process agreement. It is NOT the probability that the recommendation succeeds; the forecast track record section is the evidence on that.

64.5/100 (confidence band 46.5–82.6), 77th percentile of 893 covered names (as of 2026-10-09). Weighted composite under config ros-1.20.0 — every component and its inputs below.

Component Score (0–100) Weight Inputs
business quality 72 15% extended.fcf_quality.fcf_margin_pct, extended.balance_sheet.net_debt_to_ebitda, extended.accounting_quality.cash_conversion_pct
financial strength — 10% extended.balance_sheet.net_debt_to_ebitda, extended.balance_sheet.interest_coverage
valuation 48 15% upside_pct
growth 56 10% reconciliation.ttm_revenue_billions, reconciliation.fy_guide_revenue_billions
earnings visibility 100 10% extended.forecast_accuracy.eps_surprise.beat_rate_pct
moat 100 10% enrichment.moat.rating
technical trend (heuristic — no validation record; weight change reserved for AM-060) 19 10% technicals.rsi, technicals.sma_50, technicals.sma_200
macro tailwinds — 10% industry_context.house
risk profile 62 10% monte_carlo.prob_above_current, monte_carlo.p10, monte_carlo.p90, monte_carlo.median

Missing inputs (financial strength, macro tailwinds) are excluded and the remaining weights renormalised; the confidence band widens accordingly.

Score history: 64.6 → 64.7 → 65.3 → 65.4 → 65.1 → 65.0 → 65.0 → 64.9.

Probability-Weighted Return Profile

Horizon: 1 year — at this horizon CAGR equals total return by definition. Expected values are the probability-weighted sums over the full scenario set below.

Scenario Probability Target Total return Contribution
Structural — Fee Compression / Outflows / De-Rate 20% $50.40 -55.9% -11.2pp
Market-Drawdown / Outflows 17% $85.90 -24.8% -4.2pp
Base — AUM + Fee Growth 35% $120 +5.0% +1.8pp
Growth — Alts / Private-Markets Inflows 20% $160 +40.1% +8.0pp
Bull — Re-Rate 8% $202 +76.4% +6.1pp
Aggregate Value
Expected return (gross, 1y) +0.5%
Expected return net of SBC dilution -2.0%
Outcome dispersion (σ, from MC p10–p90) 30.4%
Expected Sharpe (rf 4%) -0.12
Downside expectation (prob-weighted loss branches) -15.4%

The gross expected return is the probability-weighted scenario return (it reconciles to the gross PWEV); the diluted figure applies the SBC share-count charge and matches the published PWEV-based target.

Expected Alpha

Expected return minus the return this name is REQUIRED to deliver for its risk (1-year horizon). Constants are pre-registered (preregistered-static (amendment #2, 2026-07-29); not fitted to MCH outcomes).

Component Value
Expected return (gross, 1y) 0.5%
Risk-free rate 4.49% (1y proxy (3m/2y midpoint; AV lacks a 1y tenor), as of 2026-10-08)
Beta (shrunk, 1y vs SPY) 1.25 (as of 2026-10-09)
Equity risk premium 4.5%
Required return 10.1%
Expected alpha -9.6%
Alpha per unit risk (EA/σ) -0.32

A negative expected alpha does not change the rating — it says the expected return does not clear the risk-adjusted hurdle at today's price. Rating mechanics are unchanged by this section.

Probability Cross-Checks

Not authoritative. The scenario probabilities in this report are AUTHORED — a judgement about how the world might go, not a measurement. Nothing below modifies them, the target, the rating or any position size. These checks ask only whether anything outside our own model agrees with us; where it does not, that is information for the reader, not a correction we have quietly applied.

Cross-check Ours Comparator Reading
Scenario spread vs options market 39.1% (1σ) 34.7% implied broadly consistent with the market's implied uncertainty
Mass above spot: scenarios vs our own MC 63.0% 38.8% the scenario weights and the MC parameters disagree about our OWN view — this is a model-coherence issue, not a market disagreement
Realised scenario frequency 57 dated anchors — 57 dated anchors available; realised-vs-prior comparison is now meaningful.

Authored set: 5 scenarios, probabilities summing to 1.0, mean target $114.83.

Flagged for review: internal coherence (authored mass vs Monte Carlo). A flag marks a disagreement worth understanding — it does not imply either side is wrong.

Rating Bridge

Rating = HOLD because:

  • Probability-weighted scenario value implies -2% vs spot
  • Monte Carlo median implies -9% vs spot
  • DCF fair value (exit-multiple terminal) implies -16% vs spot
  • Bear case (Structural — Fee Compression / Outflows / De-Rate) downside is -56% vs spot
  • Net: the valuation anchor itself sits 10.6% below spot, so there is no reward leg to weigh against the bear case and the reward-to-risk ratio is withheld rather than computed off a negative upside. The rating is not asymmetric enough for a Buy and not impaired enough for a Sell — hence Hold.

DCF — line items

FY+1 $15B $10B $0B $0B $8B $7B

FY+5 $19B $12B $0B $0B $10B $6B
Terminal — — — — $10B × 16.0x $95B

FCF is bridged: NOPAT + D&A − Capex − ΔNWC (capex intensity 1% of revenue, weighted from the segments) — not a single conversion fudge.

WACC 10.0% · Σ PV(FCF) $32B + PV(terminal) $95B = EV $128B; − net debt $11.7B → equity $116B ÷ diluted shares $1.22B = $95.50/share (exit-multiple terminal).

  • Gordon terminal → $84.06/share — a single-point perpetual-growth cross-check at g = 2.5% (one growth rate, not a range; it is not in the blend).
  • Incremental ROIC on the forecast capex ≈ 281% vs WACC 10.0% → above WACC — the build is value-creative.

Load-Bearing Assumptions

The stock-based-compensation charge sits on a step boundary. SBC is 10.00% of filed revenue — 0.00pp above the 10% threshold where the authoring rule changes step. The 2.5%/yr dilution it carries reduces the published target by about 2.4%; the other side of that threshold would carry roughly 2.0%/yr. This input is a step, not a measurement, and a modest revision to either the SBC or the revenue figure would move it.

DCF: WACC 10.0%, terminal multiple 16×, FY+5 revenue $19B. Triangulation leans 41% on DCF, 29% on PWEV, 18% on the Monte Carlo median, 12% on peer-implied value.

  • Ratings follow a defined research methodology (12-month expected-return thresholds), not individual circumstances.

Forecast record. Across 478 scored pre-registered anchors (of 480), the direction implied by our targets has been right 54.8% of the time, above the 50% a coin flip would give, by more than sampling noise at this sample size. Read as probabilities, the targets score worse than a coin flip: a proxy Brier score of 0.251 against 0.25 (lower is better); the probabilities are reconstructed from the price targets, because the engine only began publishing its own on 2026-08-04. By published rating, against each name’s sector ETF (a BUY counts as a hit when it beats it, a SELL when it trails it, a HOLD when it ends within 5 points of it): BUY: 60.0% hits, average alpha +10.2% on 5 scored; HOLD: 32.8%, −2.2% on 418; SELL: 59.1%, −0.8% on 44; STRONG SELL: 50.0%, −3.8% on 6. STRONG BUY: none of its 2 anchors could be scored. Read this page’s price target with that in mind, and see the full accuracy record. Samples are thin and windows short; nothing here is settled in either direction.
