Methodology: Valuation triangulated across four weighted anchors — an intrinsic DCF, a scenario-weighted PWEV, a Monte Carlo median (Student-t + regime switching) and a peer P/E re-rate. Anchors are blended at fixed declared weights, each counted separately; the Monte Carlo, the scenario PWEV and the DCF's exit-multiple terminal all rest on the same base multiple, so where they agree it is partly by construction — not independent corroboration. Figures reconciled to Alpha Vantage 2026-10-09. Each chart below sits with the part of the thesis it evidences.

Recommendation: SELL

Defensive: rating SELL; triangulated fair value $139 (-36% vs spot) — the risk/reward is skewed to the downside on P/E Multiple. The debate is P/E Multiple — fundamentally a multiple/regime call.

02Thesis, Anti-Thesis & Variant View

Investment Thesis

At $217 (10 October 2026) Arista trades on 53 times forward earnings, a large premium to the communications-equipment peer group. The market is pricing durable AI back-end switching growth, cloud-titan capex that keeps compounding, and no share loss to white-box alternatives or to bundled GPU-network stacks. The engine's view is less generous. Probability-weighting the scenario tree gives $155 and a twelve-month target of $154, against a triangulated fair value of $139; the shares are trading rich to that anchor set by -36%, because the capex-cyclicality states carry weight comparable to the base case and the discounted-cash-flow work will not reach a price this dependent on the rating. Most of the simulated outcome variance sits in the earnings multiple rather than in revenue or margin, and a minority of simulated paths clear the market price. The franchise is genuine — an operating margin of 43% (reported GAAP, TTM to Jun 2026) and net cash of ~$12.3B are not in dispute — but spot already pays for the upside path. SELL follows. The most damaging risk is customer concentration: Microsoft and Meta each represent a double-digit share of revenue, and a shift of back-end Ethernet spend in-house or into a bundled stack removes the growth and the multiple in the same print.

Integrated dashboard. The four weighted valuation anchors run from $94.95 to $155, all below the $217 spot — stretched — spot sits above the skeptical blend.

Anti-Thesis (The Real Bear Case)

The structural case does not need a recession. Cloud titans design their own network stacks; Microsoft and Meta already run white-box switches on SONiC at scale, and NVIDIA sells Spectrum-X Ethernet bundled with its GPUs. The buyer, the workload and the bundler sit on the same side of the table. If back-end Ethernet standardises on merchant silicon plus in-house software, the EOS premium erodes exactly where the growth is supposed to come from. In that path revenue falls, operating margin compresses as pricing follows volume out of the door, and the multiple de-rates from a premium rating toward a components rating — earnings and the rating falling together rather than in sequence. Concentration makes it fast: losing a single double-digit customer converts a growth story into a share-loss story within two prints, and net cash of ~$12.3B is far too small to repurchase the way out of a de-rate. The structural path lands below the 52-week low.

Key Debate

P/E Multiple explains 89% of Monte Carlo outcome variance — i.e. value is set by the multiple the market will pay, a rate/sentiment regime bet as much as an earnings bet.

What the Market Is Pricing In

At the current price, the market pays 52.7× consensus forward EPS, vs the house DCF terminal 30.0×, and a peer median 23.1×. The house DCF sits 36% below spot, so the market is pricing in more than the house case — roughly 4.3pp of revenue CAGR.

Variant perception: the house view is below-consensus, and the thesis is primarily FCF-driven.

03Scenario & Valuation

Scenario Analysis

The scenario tree spans a structural 'Structural — Capex Cyclicality / Share Loss' downside ($69.30) to a 'Bull — Re-Rate' bull case ($279); the probability-weighted blend (PWEV $155) is -28% versus spot.

Scenario Probability Target Return vs spot
Structural — Capex Cyclicality / Share Loss 20% $69.30 -68%
Service-Provider / Enterprise Recession 17% $117 -46%
Base — Refresh + Datacenter Demand 35% $164 -24%
Growth — AI Back-End (Optical / Switching) 20% $220 +1%
Bull — Re-Rate 8% $279 +29%
Probability-Weighted (PWEV, after SBC dilution) — $155 -28%

SBC charge: scenario targets are gross per-share prices; the PWEV is reduced by one year of stock-based-compensation dilution (1.5% of shares, on SBC ≈ 5% of revenue), trimming the gross PWEV of $157 to $155 (-1.5%). SBC is charged once, as dilution — never also deducted from FCF.

Scenario rationale — the driver path behind every target:

  • Structural — Capex Cyclicality / Share Loss (20%, $69.30). Structural impairment — capex cyclicality / share loss: earnings AND the multiple compress together. Target sits below the 52-week low by construction.
  • Service-Provider / Enterprise Recession (17%, $117). Cyclical downturn — networking / datacenter capex + AI back-end (optical / switching) + service-provider spend weakens for 1–2 years before normalising.
  • Base — Refresh + Datacenter Demand (35%, $164). Mid-cycle — normalised networking / datacenter capex + AI back-end (optical / switching) + service-provider spend; disciplined capital allocation; steady returns.
  • Growth — AI Back-End (Optical / Switching) (20%, $220). Upside — AI back-end optical & switching lifts earnings above mid-cycle; the multiple expands modestly.
  • Bull — Re-Rate (8%, $279). Upside tail — sustained tight conditions or a structural re-rate on AI back-end optical & switching.

Valuation Triangulation

Four weighted anchors — an intrinsic dcf, a scenario-weighted pwev, a monte carlo median (student-t + regime switching) and a peer p/e re-rate — read them with their basis in mind. The Monte Carlo, the scenario PWEV, any DCF's exit-multiple terminal and any peer re-rate key off a market multiple, so they are not independent; only a DCF's explicit-period cash flows are multiple-free, and its terminal usually carries most of its value. The discipline is to read the spread, not to treat four numbers as four independent votes.

Method Basis Fair Value vs Spot Weight in this name's blend
Monte Carlo median (Student-t + regime) multiple $142 -35% 18% (declared 15%)
Peer P/E re-rate multiple $94.95 -56% 12% (declared 10%)
Peer EV/Revenue re-rate multiple $57.27 -74% 0% — cross-check only
Scenario PWEV multiple $155 -28% 29% (declared 25%)
DCF (5-year + exit-multiple terminal) cash flow + terminal × $139 -36% 41% (declared 35%)
Triangulated (weighted) — $139 -36% 100%

The house blend DECLARES five anchor weights — DCF 35%, scenario PWEV 25%, Monte Carlo 15%, sum-of-parts 15%, peer re-rate 10%. For this name sum-of-parts is not computed, so 15% of the declared weight is redistributed across the anchors that exist — which is why the weights above differ from the declared ones. The fair value is unaffected by this disclosure; the blend has always worked this way. The company-lever row in the Sensitivity section is an illustrative EBIT × multiple value, not a sum-of-parts anchor.

Peer EV/Revenue re-rate — 0% weight: it duplicates the peer-multiple information already carried by the Peer P/E anchor while ignoring margin mix; weighting both would double-count the peer view. Shown as a cross-check.

Monte Carlo — the outcome distribution

10,000 paths, Student-t shocks (fat tails) with a regime-switching overlay. The median lands at $142 and 12% of paths finish above spot. The variance decomposition shows the p/e multiple is the dominant swing factor (89% of variance). Value is a multiple bet: fundamentals move the answer far less than the rating does.

Monte Carlo distribution. Median <img src=
Monte Carlo distribution. Median $142; P(price > current) 12%. P10–P90: $85.03–$224.

DCF — explicit-period cash flows with an exit-multiple terminal

A 5-year cash-flow path discounted at a WACC of 9.0%, plus a terminal value of final-year FCF × 30.0x — a terminal multiple equal to 0.85 × the base multiple that the Monte Carlo and the scenario tree also use → $139. The terminal value is 85% of enterprise value, so this anchor moves with the multiple assumption. The heaviest anchor in this blend (41%); because its terminal is a market multiple, it is not independent of the multiple-driven anchors.

DCF (exit-multiple terminal). WACC 9.0%, 30.0x terminal → $139; terminal 85% of EV.

Peer benchmarking — relative value

Against its 3 peers in the same GICS sub-industry, re-rating to their median forward multiple (P/E 23.1x) implies $94.95. A premium is only justified by superior growth/margins; otherwise it is multiple risk. Weighted just 12% so market sentiment does not set the fair value.

Cross-sectional peer benchmarking. Same-sub-industry median fwd P/E 23.1x → $94.95; EV/Rev re-rate → $57.27.
Cross-sectional peer benchmarking. Same-sub-industry median fwd P/E 23.1x → $94.95; EV/Rev re-rate → $57.27.

Across all anchors the spread is 70% of the median — wide (genuine disagreement — the blend carries low valuation confidence).

That ratio is (triangulated FV ÷ price − 1) ÷ (1 − 'Structural — Capex Cyclicality / Share Loss' target ÷ price). 'Structural — Capex Cyclicality / Share Loss' ($69.30, probability 20%) is the lowest-target scenario in the tree, taken gross of SBC dilution. Company Overview & Business Model

Arista Networks — TECHNOLOGY · COMPUTER HARDWARE. Arista Networks (formerly Arastra) is an American computer networking company headquartered in Santa Clara, California. The company designs and sells multilayer network switches to deliver software-defined networking (SDN) solutions for large datacenter, cloud computing, high-performance computing, and high-frequency trading environments.

Company description as supplied by Alpha Vantage; not checked against the company's filings.

How it makes money.

Segment Rev mix Growth Model op margin† Key driver
Communications Equipment 100% +8% 52% networking / datacenter capex + AI back-end (optical / switching) + service-provider spend

† Model margin = gross margin − the opex ratio calibrated so the Monte Carlo median EPS meets the EPS target; it is not a reported operating margin.

Reported operating margin (GAAP): 42.8% for the fiscal year ended 2025-12-31; 43.1% TTM to 2026-06-30 (Alpha Vantage INCOME_STATEMENT).

Edge. Narrow moat — A narrow moat (EOS software stickiness + merchant-silicon design lead) supports a mid-20s terminal multiple, not the ~45x segment multiple embedded today; if switching commoditizes and cloud titans in-house more of the back-end, the terminal multiple should compress toward the S&P ~16-18x, cutting fair value by a third.

  • EOS single-image network operating system with programmability lock-in across the estate (software switching cost)
  • Merchant-silicon (Broadcom Tomahawk/Jericho) architecture edge in high-radix, low-latency AI back-end fabrics
  • Customer concentration cuts both ways: Microsoft + Meta ~35% of revenue is a scale relationship but NOT a switching-cost moat — hyperscalers can dual-source or design in-house (white-box/Nvidia Spectrum)
  • No structural cost/distribution advantage vs Cisco, Nvidia networking, or white-box ODMs

Scenario Macro & Key Risks

Scenario Macro assumption Key risk
Structural — Capex Cyclicality / Share Loss AI back-end networking commoditizes; hyperscalers in-house/white-box switching or standardize on Nvidia Spectrum-X, and merchant-silicon advantage erodes. Loss of a top-2 hyperscaler design slot collapses both volume and the premium multiple simultaneously.
Base — Refresh + Datacenter Demand Steady cloud + enterprise refresh with datacenter demand compounding high-single-digits; no capex cliff. Hyperscaler digestion quarter lands earlier than expected and de-rates the growth premium.
Growth — AI Back-End (Optical / Switching) AI cluster scale-out sustains double-digit back-end switching/optical content growth; Etherlink 800G/1.6T wins share. InfiniBand/Spectrum-X captures the incremental AI fabric, capping Ethernet share of the AI TAM.
Bull — Re-Rate AI-networking is treated as a secular compounder and the multiple re-rates on sustained beats and margin durability. Multiple is already ~45x; any growth wobble triggers outsized de-rating (multiple is the risk, not earnings).

  • Non-GAAP operating margin < 0.5 (2 consecutive prints). (rationale withheld pending re-authoring — frozen figure or verdict)
  • Cloud-titan customer concentration (10% customers, 10-Q disclosure) < 0.1 (single event). (rationale withheld pending re-authoring — frozen figure or verdict)
  • Product deferred revenue, quarter on quarter change < 0 (2 consecutive prints). Product deferred revenue is the observable order-book proxy for large AI back-end deployments under acceptance terms. Two consecutive declines signal the pipeline of new cluster deployments is emptying faster than it refills, ahead of any revenue miss.

Fact / Inference / Speculation

  • FACT: Spot $217; 52-week range $115–$217; engine rating SELL; house target $154 (-29%). (source: Alpha Vantage 2026-10-09, 10 October 2026)
  • INFERENCE: Triangulated FV $139 (-36% vs spot · triangulated FV); the rating tracks the Monte-Carlo + scenario-PWEV core; the DCF anchor sits below the multiple-discipline core.
  • SPECULATION: At current prices the embedded bet is that the market keeps paying the current multiple through the capex cycle — a regime call the engine cannot verify from fundamentals alone.

Conviction Score

Research Conviction measures the strength and quality of the research setup — input coverage, financial quality, valuation support, process agreement. It is NOT the probability that the recommendation succeeds; the forecast track record section is the evidence on that.

68.2/100 (confidence band 53.3–83.1), 89th percentile of 893 covered names (as of 2026-10-09). Weighted composite under config ros-1.20.0 — every component and its inputs below.

Component Score (0–100) Weight Inputs
business quality 91 15% extended.fcf_quality.fcf_margin_pct, extended.balance_sheet.net_debt_to_ebitda, extended.accounting_quality.cash_conversion_pct
financial strength 90 10% extended.balance_sheet.net_debt_to_ebitda, extended.balance_sheet.interest_coverage
valuation 21 15% upside_pct
growth 61 10% reconciliation.ttm_revenue_billions, reconciliation.fy_guide_revenue_billions
earnings visibility 100 10% extended.forecast_accuracy.eps_surprise.beat_rate_pct
moat 66 10% enrichment.moat.rating
technical trend (heuristic — no validation record; weight change reserved for AM-060) 87 10% technicals.rsi, technicals.sma_50, technicals.sma_200
macro tailwinds — 10% industry_context.house
risk profile 42 10% monte_carlo.prob_above_current, monte_carlo.p10, monte_carlo.p90, monte_carlo.median

Missing inputs (macro tailwinds) are excluded and the remaining weights renormalised; the confidence band widens accordingly.

Probability-Weighted Return Profile

Horizon: 1 year — at this horizon CAGR equals total return by definition. Expected values are the probability-weighted sums over the full scenario set below.

Scenario Probability Target Total return Contribution
Structural — Capex Cyclicality / Share Loss 20% $69.30 -68.0% -13.6pp
Service-Provider / Enterprise Recession 17% $117 -46.2% -7.8pp
Base — Refresh + Datacenter Demand 35% $164 -24.2% -8.5pp
Growth — AI Back-End (Optical / Switching) 20% $220 +1.4% +0.3pp
Bull — Re-Rate 8% $279 +28.9% +2.3pp
Aggregate Value
Expected return (gross, 1y) -27.3%
Expected return net of SBC dilution -28.4%
Outcome dispersion (σ, from MC p10–p90) 25.1%
Expected Sharpe (rf 4%) -1.25
Downside expectation (prob-weighted loss branches) -29.9%

The gross expected return is the probability-weighted scenario return (it reconciles to the gross PWEV); the diluted figure applies the SBC share-count charge and matches the published PWEV-based target.

Expected Alpha

Expected return minus the return this name is REQUIRED to deliver for its risk (1-year horizon). Constants are pre-registered (preregistered-static (amendment #2, 2026-07-29); not fitted to MCH outcomes).

Component Value
Expected return (gross, 1y) -27.3%
Risk-free rate 4.49% (1y proxy (3m/2y midpoint; AV lacks a 1y tenor), as of 2026-10-08)
Beta (shrunk, 1y vs SPY) 1.67 (as of 2026-10-09)
Equity risk premium 4.5%
Required return 12.0%
Expected alpha -39.3%
Alpha per unit risk (EA/σ) -1.57

A negative expected alpha does not change the rating — it says the expected return does not clear the risk-adjusted hurdle at today's price. Rating mechanics are unchanged by this section.

Probability Cross-Checks

Not authoritative. The scenario probabilities in this report are AUTHORED — a judgement about how the world might go, not a measurement. Nothing below modifies them, the target, the rating or any position size. These checks ask only whether anything outside our own model agrees with us; where it does not, that is information for the reader, not a correction we have quietly applied.

Cross-check Ours Comparator Reading
Scenario spread vs options market 28.5% (1σ) 43.7% implied broadly consistent with the market's implied uncertainty
Mass above spot: scenarios vs our own MC 28.0% 11.7% the two expressions of our own view agree
Realised scenario frequency 57 dated anchors — 57 dated anchors available; realised-vs-prior comparison is now meaningful.

Authored set: 5 scenarios, probabilities summing to 1.0, mean target $157.46.

Rating Bridge

Rating = SELL because:

  • Probability-weighted scenario value implies -28% vs spot
  • Monte Carlo median implies -35% vs spot
  • DCF fair value (exit-multiple terminal) implies -36% vs spot — but this is terminal-value sensitive (exit-multiple $139 vs Gordon $86.80, 38% apart), so it carries less weight
  • Bear case (Structural — Capex Cyclicality / Share Loss) downside is -68% vs spot
  • Net: the valuation anchor itself sits 35.9% below spot, so there is no reward leg to weigh against the bear case and the reward-to-risk ratio is withheld rather than computed off a negative upside. The rating warrants a Sell.

DCF — line items

Year Revenue Op income (house path) − Capex + D&A FCF PV(FCF)
FY+1 $10B $7B $0B $0B $6B $5B
FY+2 $11B $7B $0B $0B $6B $5B
FY+3 $12B $8B $0B $0B $7B $5B
FY+4 $12B $8B $0B $0B $7B $5B
FY+5 $13B $9B $0B $0B $7B $5B
Terminal — — — — $7B × 30.0x $143B

FCF is bridged: NOPAT + D&A − Capex − ΔNWC (capex intensity 4% of revenue, weighted from the segments) — not a single conversion fudge.

WACC 9.0% · Σ PV(FCF) $25B + PV(terminal) $143B = EV $168B; + net cash $12.3B → equity $180B ÷ diluted shares $1.30B = $139/share (exit-multiple terminal).

  • Gordon terminal → $86.80/share — a single-point perpetual-growth cross-check at g = 2.5% (one growth rate, not a range; it is not in the blend).
  • Incremental ROIC on the forecast capex ≈ 181% vs WACC 9.0% → above WACC — the build is value-creative.

Model Calibration Caveats

Raised by the model's own checks on its run of 10 October 2026 (prices as of 2026-10-09). They concern how the model was calibrated, not the company; read the figures they touch with them in mind.

  • The Monte Carlo gives only a 12% probability of the price finishing above today's; the house treats readings under 30% as a sign the downside assumptions may be too severe.

Load-Bearing Assumptions

The stock-based-compensation charge sits on a step boundary. SBC is 4.88% of filed revenue — 0.12pp below the 5% threshold where the authoring rule changes step. The 1.5%/yr dilution it carries reduces the published target by about 1.5%; the other side of that threshold would carry roughly 2.0%/yr. This input is a step, not a measurement, and a modest revision to either the SBC or the revenue figure would move it.

DCF: WACC 9.0%, terminal multiple 30×, FY+5 revenue $13B. Triangulation leans 41% on DCF, 29% on PWEV, 18% on the Monte Carlo median, 12% on peer-implied value.

Forecast record. Across 478 scored pre-registered anchors (of 480), the direction implied by our targets has been right 54.8% of the time, above the 50% a coin flip would give, by more than sampling noise at this sample size. Read as probabilities, the targets score worse than a coin flip: a proxy Brier score of 0.251 against 0.25 (lower is better); the probabilities are reconstructed from the price targets, because the engine only began publishing its own on 2026-08-04. By published rating, against each name’s sector ETF (a BUY counts as a hit when it beats it, a SELL when it trails it, a HOLD when it ends within 5 points of it): BUY: 60.0% hits, average alpha +10.2% on 5 scored; HOLD: 32.8%, −2.2% on 418; SELL: 59.1%, −0.8% on 44; STRONG SELL: 50.0%, −3.8% on 6. STRONG BUY: none of its 2 anchors could be scored. Read this page’s price target with that in mind, and see the full accuracy record. Samples are thin and windows short; nothing here is settled in either direction.
